Going to San Francisco!

H found out yesterday that he gets to take me along on his work trip to SF. One of the radio station H works for broadcasts all of the Fresno State football games and they'll be broadcasting from the Cal v. Fresno State game. I'm sooo excited because I didn't know if I would get to go with him and I wanted to go to this game really bad.

We're staying at the Marriott in San Mateo and I was wondering if anyone knew if there was either a BART station or a Cal Train station near by. I want to take H into the city on Sunday before we head home but I don't want to drive into the city. I might have some time to myself on Friday so I might do some exploring. I think there's some shops near the hotel I can go explore. Any recommendations?

Re: Going to San Francisco!

  • No BART in San Mateo but there are a few Caltrain stations. I've never ridden it myself (though others here have) and don't know much about it, but there is info and schedules here.
  • The most southern Bart station is in Millbrae, and according to Google map, the distance between Marriott (in San Mateo) and the Caltrain station is about 2 miles.

Can you check if the hotel provides any shuttle services to and from the Caltrain station or San Mateo downtown? Or to and from the airport (so you could take Bart from there)? You could also drive and park at Caltrain or Bart, although I don't know their parking rates.

Depending on where you want to go in SF, you might or might not have to take additional public transportation. Bart will allow you to get out in downtown, whereas the Caltrain station would be closer to the AT&T Park.

Most BART stations only charge for parking during the week, and then it's a dollar or so. But if there's a game in the city, parking might be tough at the stations.

  • I searched online and there is a BART station at SFO and the hotel has a free airport shuttle that runs every hour. Only downside is that it's at the airport. Cal Train isn't that far even if we drove. The Giants have do have a home series that weekend so the trains could be a little crowded. I wouldn't mind being by AT&T Park. I LOVE my Giants=). Who knows, maybe I can convince H to catch the Giants game on that Sunday before we head home.

The BART station isn't actually at SFO you have to take a shuttle from BART to SFO. It's easy and short though. Parking at CalTrain stations during Giants games can be crazy. You might want to have a back up plan. GL though. Both BART and CalTrain rock IMO. I SO wish I could take them down here. So Cal public transit sucks!

The Metro really does suck. There's all these different colored lines and it gets REALLY confusing. I used Metro a couple of times to get to Union Station and it wasn't too bad. I went to college near Pasadena and it frustrated us that there was no Metro line from where we were in Azusa to get to Pasadena. They're supposed to expand the Metro out to Azusa/Glendora but they've been saying that for about four years now.

  • Yeah Metro Link has a big station right outside our complex but every time I've mapped it to go somewhere it would take FOREVER. Definitely doesn't seem efficient for a commute. Anyway GL in the Bay Area!
