AW: vacation plans

DH and I will be hiking here over Thanksgiving!

It's the Wave in Utah, an area of ancient sand dunes eroded into crazy shapes and colors. Only 20 people a day are allowed to hike it. I've been entering the permit lottery for months and finally won (much sooner than I thought I would- sometimes it takes years).  Now I'll have to whip DH into shape so he can keep up with me!

Re: AW: vacation plans

  • I'll be honest -- this sort of looks like desert to me, which sounds like tons of heat, which, given Oklahoma's 110-degree weather as of late, sounds like absolute hell.

Hope you and your DH have a blast, though. :)

It is a desert, but we're going in late November so it'll be nice and cool then. No way would I try this trip in the middle of summer!

  • That looks so beautiful! (Though I'm glad it's you in the heat and not me :) )

    Enjoy!

  • Looks amazing!  I'm not much for hiking, but I'd love to be able to see something like that in person!
  • Oh fun! Congrats!!

Permitting is through the BLM's website here: Coyote Buttes North. They issue advance permits for 10 people through the online lottery and permits for 10 people through a walk-in lottery at the field station the day before. Online permitting is for 4 months from now, i.e. if you enter the lottery between August 1-31 you have a shot at a date in December. You can enter 3 dates you want for the month, but if you win you only get one. My strategy was to wait till the end of the month and then pick the least in-demand days that I was able to go, so I had less competition.
