Break-in

My inlaws had a break-in last night - they also live in London.  I just spent the last hour over there with the police and discussing what needs to get done.  No Beer Festival for us tonight.  This is their second break-in this summer.  We've been telling them to replace their windows (wood with single pane) and get an alarm system for the past year - now they are finally listening - after having windows and doors broken, a few things stolen and the possibility that they could have gone up to their bedrooms w/o them knowing (fil is hard of hearing on 2nd floor bedroom and mil has a bedroom on the top of the 3 floor house - it seems like they only took things from first floor (or ground floor)).  They can afford the changes but are just too stubborn to make changes and can't agree on any change, so they just stalemate.

I think we'll have to stay there for a week or so until things get sorted so they feel more safe.  They are elderly and live in a house butting up to a park, which makes it less safe.  I do wish they would move but they aren't willing to make that change right now. Argh.  I'm sure I'll be stubborn when I'm old...but seriously, I hope someone kicks me up the backside if I'm this bad.  My DH and I have basically told them that we'll be making all the decisions about their house now and they'll just have to deal with it (I already have a call in to a friend who knows a company that is good with doors/windows & we've told them which security company to call to get a quote).

I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.

Re: Break-in

  • Wow! I'm really sorry and that is really scary. I'm glad they are ok, but hope they take your advice.

  • That's scary.  And twice this summer?  Wow.  Good for you and your H for pushing them to make some changes.

  • how scary! I am glad they are okay though. My grandma is stubborn like that too, except it was because she didn't want to move closer to family and lose her independence. It took her falling and breaking something before she finally  moved.
  • You're a good daughter-in-law for doing it for all the right reasons.

DH's grandmother had a similar experience due to older doors and finally she got one of those heavy duty doors with double-glazed window pane put in. Thankfully, no more break-ins!

  • Eek.  Our building is pretty secure on its own, but I'm still glad we have an alarm system, just for the peace of mind!  I've had two friends be burgled, and it would make me so scared if it happened to me.

  • Awww, I'm sorry this happened, but it sounds like it was the push they need to make their home more safe.  Hopefully that was the last one.

Also, you are such a good daughter in law!

  • Were they home during the break-in?

I'm glad they're finally making those changes.  Hell, after one break-in in our building we were freaked out enough to get bars on the windows that needed them.  I can't imagine two break-ins in our own house!

I'm sorry that happened.  Thieves suck.  :(  Good luck getting things sorted out today.

  • Yikes. How scary for them - I hope you get things sorted for them soon, and their confidence isn't too shaken.

  • Scary! You are right taking things in your own hands, it will give you & them so much more peace of mind.
  • Thanks guys.  I can forsee that issues will come up in the future as they get older and more infirm.  But at least the husband and I are pretty much pushy when it comes to his parents and they'll just have to work with it.  Gotta love the old farts.

  • Oh no!  Your poor IL's. Glad to hear though that nothing more serious happened.  And I am glad to hear that they are finally listening to you and your dh about getting windows and an alarm updated.

  • How scary! I'm glad that it sounds like you guys will be able to get them to make some changes to have proper security precautions.

Yes, this.  How scary.  I hope the changes help them to feel more secure.

  • That is terrible - would they consider getting a dog? Not necessarily a large one, but one that could at least alert them if something was happening so they could call 999?

As it goes, I have one going spare. Goes MENTAL if someone comes to the house. I bring him with me next weekend?

  • How terrible, it must be even more terrifying when you are elderly. How are they coping with two break ins in a couple of months? Poor people.

    This!

Though this is very scary, I am glad nothing too serious happened. Glad you are pushing them in being "safer"

  • Glad to hear that they are ok and that you and your H are taking their safety into your own hands! I hope some home improvements prevent this from happening again, scary :(
