Random question--has anyone been to Laos?

Specifically the airport in Luang Prabang?  Long story short, I am flying through there in November on my way to Hanoi (thank you H for not paying attention to whether or not you were booking direct flights).  I have a 40 minute layover.

I am trying to figure out if I need a transit visa to switch planes if I never leave the airport.  Does anyone know?

Re: Random question--has anyone been to Laos?

  • We flew there from Bangkok, and we stayed, so I am completely unhelpful. Except I vaguely recall people getting off from a flight from Vietnam, going to the bathroom, and getting back on the flight to Bangkok when we were leaving, and not getting a visa.

Off topic, but go there sometime. It is amazing, truly.

  • The airport in LP is like 5 ft long. You get a visa on arrival if you're a tourist so I imagine you could just take care of any visa requirements when you get there. They're crazy laid back - one of the best things about Laos. There was a couple in front of us that didn't have enough money to pay the visa fee. They just waved them through to go to the ATM at the airport entrance outside immigration and security. No problem.

  • I am wondering if it's the same plane and is just making a pit stop in Laos.

I have to say that I'm dying to visit Laos on its own.  Maybe for our next weekish long holiday... How much time did you guys spend there?

  • I was in Luang Prabang last month but arrived by boat and left by bus, so I'm no help.

But I can say Laos was one of my favorite countries I've visited.  So beautiful, amazingly laid back and the people are fantastic.  Luang Prabang is really beautiful and we went trekking about 50 km north of the city for a couple of days... the scenery was all just breathtaking. We were in the country itself for I think 10 or 11 days.

    Now jumping domestically.

Well that was a crazy couple of years.

  • No but I'm dying to go.

Google 'Laos Consular Information Sheet'.  If you're 'murican, that should tell you if you need a transit visa or not.

Oh, Americans definitely need a visa to be there.  I'm just not sure if it's one of those countries, like the US and Canada, which make you clear customs and immigration before you can change to a connecting international flight.  The consular info sheet is no help there Sad  I'll probably just take some USD and a passport photo on the off chance they make me go through immigration before allowing me to board the next flight.

  • We were in LP for 5 days I think? We did pretty much all we could do, but loved it. You definitely need a visa if you are leaving the airport.

  • Check the visa reqs on the IATA website. It's what many of the airlines use to figure out if they should let you board the plane in the first place or not.

    http://www.iatatravelcentre.com/

You can enter your nationality, residency, origin, destination, and transit countries, and it will give you general information for visas and transit visas. It's a good place to start, if nothing else.

(In cases where I'm really concerned - EH's Indian passport made this a huge issue - check the embassy's website in the US or try to contact the local embassy directly)
