Transit visa for India?

OK, so FH and I will be flying through Delhi on our way back to Turkmenistan from Nepal. We won't be leaving the airport, but Publius' post got me thinking about transit visas.  Anyone know if we'll need one in this situation?

I've looked online and know Americans need visas and I found some website from some visa service that has a list of requirements for a visa.  I won't have all that information (e.g., a utility bill whose address matches my driver's license address or computer generated flight itinerary - Turkmenistan Airlines doesn't do that), so I'm a bit concerned.  Indian embassy webpage isn't working, either.

Anyone know if they'll let us switch flights from one airline to another without having a visa in advance?

 Thanks!

  • Try looking at the Travisa website instead, all of the Indian visas issued in the US are through them, their website has a lot of info: https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/faqs

  • Hey Brit... how are you enjoying India? We've actually just booked a trip in October since DH has a conference to go to in Pune. We'll only be there for 11 days but I'm super excited. Any thoughts on clothing? I'm finding that entirely overwhelming! I tend to be a black tank top and jeans with flip flops traveller and I don't think that will work.

    Hope you're having fun!

Jet - I 'think' you'll be okay as long as you aren't planning on leaving the airport. We've been looking into our visa situation (since we have to apply with our US passports from here so it seems to be a bit complicated) and I don't remember seeing anything about transit visas. Definitely don't take my word for it though!

(In a meeting, will answer in more detail later...) I wrote a blog post about the clothes that I brought to India and how they are working out: http://eatrunbrit.com/2011/07/25/an-india-inappropriate-fashion-show/

ETA: I'm really enjoying it so far. Things move a bit slower here, so I am learning to be patient, but other than that, so far so good.

I thought that I would be comfortable in long sundresses and linen pants w/ tank tops, but I'm definitely not. I have a few really light weight vest-like tops, kind of like this one, that have been working pretty well to turn my "normal" clothes into India-friendly outfits.

  • That's interesting, thanks! I'm thinking jeans with longer tops mostly. Are those tops okay even though they're sleeveless? I thought that was a big thing, showing your shoulders.

I was reading your story about getting a mobile set up, that sounds like quite the adventure!

It seems to be a matter of how much shoulder. At least in Chennai, I see a fair amount of women, especially younger ones who wear sleeveless shirts, but never anything racerback or with skinny straps or anything...more like if you took a normal t-shirt and chopped the sleeves off kind of sleeveless. (Like a shell that would go under a cardigan in a twinset?) Chest coverage seems to be key as well.

Ultimately, I will probably break down and just buy a bunch of salwars, but I just haven't had time yet.

  • Shoulders are fine - just not skinny straps...sleeveless is okay.  You just don't want to show off boobage or knees so much.

  • Interesting. I never realised how many low cut tops I had until I started thinking through what to bring to India.

So jeans plus sleeveless (not strappy) tops are okay. Should they be longer? I typically have my shirts his about hipbone level, would that work or should I have longer shirts?

    This is super helpful, thanks!

  • Doesn't have to be long...just not showing off skin basically.
