Anyone heard of this?

Hey, I've never posted on this board, but I need a little help.

My new boss of 6 weeks has no experience (at all) as his roll as a nursing home administrator. He is a mico-manager and according to the person who's office is next to mine, it's not uncommon for him to come back to my office around 6-7 times an hour (I spend most of my time on the floor with the residents) trying to find me.

We've had some dificulty the last few weeks with him trying to mico-manage everything that we do, to the point of him calling us on our cell phones when we're out for lunch to find out where we are (even after we've checked out with the office).

Tonight I got an e-mail that said that every Thursday will be clean your office Thursday. He said he expects our offices to be cleaned, files labeled and organized so that we can give him a walk through of our offices so that in a pinch he can walk in and find what he needs (exact words). He also said that he will be conducting his walk throughs tomorrow at 3:00 PM, and if they are not acceptable, he said he cannot go home. (This is great because I have meetings from 9AM-12AM and then from 1:00-2:00.) He also changed all of our e-mails this week to a different server so that he can link all of our e-mails to his e-mails so he can now review ALL of our e-mails.
I'm not a crappy employee, we just had our state survey, and not only did I have a perfect review, I had plenty of complements. I feel very uncomfortable by all of this.

Please tell me this is wrong, or am I being irrational? I'm thinking about telling him that I'll clean my office tomorrow so that he can put my replacement in there because I want to quit.

WWYD? TIA!!

Re: Anyone heard of this?

  • I don't know what the rules are in your state or organization, but surely HE has a superior you can go to with your concerns? As for the email server, legally I don't believe there's much you can do about that. Is there an HR department? State department? Something?

But from what I can read between the lines, doesn't seem like he's doing anything illegal. Though, sounds like since you're in a nursing home, perhaps you're also in a union? Talk to your rep; just the ideas that pop into my head!

But yes, does sound HIGHLY annoying and inconvenient.

  • It's over the top, but it doesn't sound like there's much you can do. He may start out this way and loosen his grip as he gets more comfortable in the role and sees that his employees are doing fine without the micromanagement.

Does he have a supervisor at all you can speak to? is there someone mentoring him? It sounds like he needs a mentor.

For now I'd do what he says within reason and see if things settle down. If your office isn't perfect at 3pm due to meetings, just let him know that. I'd assume things are already pretty easy to find in your office given the info you shared.

I've had micromanagers. I just worked within the system.

  • My husband works in an office where his desk must be cleared completely of paperwork and such at the end of every day.

He is also has a financial services license which requires the company to actively review his e-mails as part of regulatory compliance.

Many companies have policies which say they can review your e-mails. whether or not they invest the time into doing so is a different story.
