B&B/boutique hotel/weekend trip recs for our anniversary?

Our anniversary is coming up in September, and we'd like to take a short weekend trip somewhere within driving distance of DC.  We'd basically just want to have a nice dinner and spend the night somewhere other than our house; other than that, we're not picky (aside from not wanting to go to the DE beaches - we already spend a lot of our weekends visiting family there).  We don't have any particular activities in mind (although we're always game for wine tasting or breweries), and would be fine just relaxing somewhere away from home.  We were initially thinking maybe Charlottesville or Chincoteague.  Any suggestions of places to stay/eat there, or other places that might be worth visiting?  TIA!

It's near Middleburg, VA which looks like it has tons of cute little B&Bs nearby. There's a fun (but small) downtown strip with small, boutique shops.

We stayed there a few years back and had a wonderful time. It's near Middleburg, VA which looks like it has tons of cute little B&Bs nearby. There's a fun (but small) downtown strip with small, boutique shops.

  • we loved our weekend in leesburg (since we only had two nights, we didn't want to spend 5-6 hours roundtrip to charlottesville)

we stayed at the norris house inn which is walking distance to most of the restaurants in downtown leesburg. we loved the wineries we visited (especially fabbioli, hiddencroft, and chrysalis). it was perfect because we weren't far and it almost felt like a longer vaca than it was. we ate at doner bistro, tuskies, and vintage 50 - all three were really good. tuskies and doner were probably our faves. if you want more specific info on norris house, the wineries or restaurants, let me know.

  • We stayed at the Clifton Inn in Charlottesville and it was nice because we got upgraded to a suite but I don't think I would pay normal rate there. The property is really pretty and the staff was so nice but the dinner was just okay. So, if they are running a special I would stay there again. Also, Boars Head Inn is nice too.

We stayed at Poplar Springs (not far from Warrenton) a few years ago and it was great! And, the spa is wonderful.

If you want to go fancy- the Inn at Perry Cabin is lovely.

Hubby and I spent our anniversary weekend at the Ruffled Duck Inn in Oxford, MD. It was awesome, Oxford itself is a little town very Mayberry like. During the day you can go over to St. Michael's which is very cute and has an excellent winery, brewery, and pizza place. Oxford is also situated right in the MD Wine Trail :)

  • Thanks, ladies!  These all sound great, and I've never been to any of the towns (even Leesburg - I think I've only driven through en route to Loudon wineries).  I may come back with more questions once we decide :)
