Kristen re: food allergy

Do you think it could still be food allergy even though she was fine for so long? And could it be that she's ok with BF (regardless of my diet) but allergic to milk-based formula?

Re: Kristen re: food allergy

  • Margots symptoms started at 1 month old. When did you start the formula? Is that when you noticed it starting? If she were to have a fairly mild sensitivity, it's possible that she react more mildly to the BM because our bodies kind of clean the BM, whereas she's getting a straight hit of milk protein from the formula (cutting out the middle man ie you). Basically, the sensitivity is not to the food itself, but the proteins and/or GMOs that are in the food. Cow milk proteins alone are hard for babies to digest. Add in all of the new hormones and antibiotics they give cows that show up in the milk and it becomes even harder for them to digest because its seen as a foreign substance. Of course, some babies are able to tolerate it, others can't but grow out of it and can later, others never can. It could be other stuff in the formula too. 60% of dairy sensitive babies are also soy sensitive (soy is terrible for us to eat anyways!) and some have corn in them too. Babies are especially sensitive, but can grow out of the sensitivity. 90% of food allergies are from the top 8 list: dairy, soy, gluten, corn, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts. The reactions are iGe or iGg. The iGe reaction is the immediate response - red eyes, puffiness, watery eyes, sneezing, rash, etc. Then there's an iGg reaction, which is typically delayed and tends to affect the GI tract - lots of spitting up, possibly mucusy stool or blood in stool (looks like dark flecks or strings), undigested milk curdles in the stool, diaper rash, eczema, etc. A reaction could constitute 1 or more of these things depending on the severity of the reaction. Does she have any other symptoms that youre aware of? Keep me posted on what they say!! I'll be thinking of you guys tomorrow! What time is the appt?

  • Thanks, Kristen. She started the one bottle of formula a day at 3 months. She does spit up after nursing, too, not just the formula.

I don't think she has any of the other symptoms you mentioned. Her appt is at 1:30 today, I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks again :)

  • Good! I hope it's nothing!!! I'll be thinking of you both this afternoon.
