This is the quilt that got me into sewing back in Fall 2005. My great-grandmother made it for my grandparents using scraps from clothes. It's huge. In the picture it's on a full size bed and hangs down really far on each side (per Grandma's request, she was tired of Grandpa stealing the blankets). Unfortunately, it's really starting to show it's age. At the ends there are places where the fabric has been ripped and you can see the batting inside. Any suggestions as to how to go about repairing this quilt?
Sorry about the poor quality of the photo. It's from Jan 06. This is from my college apartment and I had a terrible digital camera.
Re: Quilt Repair
What do you mean by at the ends? The very edges, like the binding is worn? That's usually one of the first places to show age. Re-binding would be a pretty easy repair, even for a non-quilter (sorry, not sure what your experience is, I'm pretty new here). You can purchase ready made binding if you don't want to make your own.
It also looks like it's tied rather than quilted. If there are tears in the quilt top itself, you can cut the ties to separate the top, batting, and backing, and work on the individual layers. If it's just one or two areas, you could untie just part of the quilt to free a portion of the top rather than the whole thing.
Could you PIP some images of the damaged areas? That would be helpful.
