HBO Documentary - "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane"

Has anyone else watched this, about the mom in NY who had a car accident that killed 8 people?  What did you think?  I can't stop wondering what really happened and why she ingested so much alcohol while driving five kids down the freeway.  Her husband's defense of her does not seem credible to me.

  • There is an interesting blurb about her on the People You'll See in Hell blog.  It has some pretty detailed information and he has a pretty good theory on what happened.

Wow.  Very interesting.  Thanks for the link!

  • So very very very sad! The mother of the three lost girls is pregnant again. I cannot imagine their pain. :-(
  • I tried to read all of that link but i'm sick to my stomach.  Sick sick sick to my stomach.

  • I wish I hadn't read that.  It's all just tragic.
  • Awful.  It gave me goosebumps halfway through and I had to stop reading.  Just makes me sick.

  • Every time I try to watch it online my internet goes down.  Oh and once again my ondemand isn't working either.  From what all I have read on it, the husband is totally delusional.

  • I haven't seen the documentary, but I read the article.

I cannot imagine what the husband is dealing with, what an awful spot to be in.  If I were in the same spot, I might be delusional to in order to cope with what had happened.  Tragic.

  • I agree the husband is probably delusional, BUT what if someone bascially told you that your DH was in a wreck and he was high as a kite on heroin or cocaine.  You might say to yourself - "that is ridiculous, I have never known him to take drugs in his life, so there must be some other explantation."  I'm just saying, if he truly had no idea that she drank (which is hard to believe, but might? be possible), I could see him trying to grasp for something else, anything else.  He still should be sympathic to the other families, though IMO.

It's very tragic all around.  The worst part is that the guy told her to pull over and wait MULTIPLE times, and she was in such a state that she wasn't even rational to think "ok - someone else can help me out, so I better stop now".

  • I agree. I can't imagine bring the husband either. He essentially lost three people too. His daughter, his wife and the image he had of the wife he thought he had. :-(.
And having an alcoholic sister.... She often times thinks she is ok when she's not. Alcoholics are some if the best liars... Even to themselves. So sad!!!
  • I'm thinking that because they worked opposite schedules (her at night, him during the day) that if she had a drinking problem, she could have easily hidden it from him. In the documentary, even his own mother said that he was like Diane's 3rd child - she was the boss and ran the household.  She was also the primary financial support for their family.

I just read this article in the Ladies Home Journal that Diane's brother's wife wrote about the experience of losing all three of her children.  It made me cry, but it was also uplifting to read that she's expecting a baby this fall.

This is where I think the guy is a flaming douchebag. Whether or not you think the autopsy was wrong or if you think your wife was or was not an alcoholic and regular pot smoker is one thing. To sue the man that lost all three of his children, not to mention your freaking brother in law, because he owned the vehicle YOUR WIFE was driving while she was shitface intoxicated is just wrong. Wrong. I don't even have other words.

It makes me so freaking angry. Gah.

That Diane made me crazymichelle angry as it is.  This guy would not want to be in my vicinity. I'm not sure I've ever seen batshitcrazymichelle and I don't want to.

even IF, somehow, the toxicology/autopsy is wrong and she was perfectly sober... how does the car play any role in the fact that she was going the wrong way?  I just dont get how this can even be allowed.  The car didn't drive itself onto the freeway in the wrong direction.

And, top that off with the Husband's original claims that the Wife was having a stroke or some other problem, its obvious from all reports that SOMETHING was wrong with her.  Again, how is the car in any way part of the cause of the crash.

This whole thing is so sad and sick.  I pray that one day, this man can come to terms with what has happened and just let it go.  No lawsuit is going to bring his wife, daughter, nieces and those men in the other car back.

  • This is just disgusting! And for her husband to be in complete denial is shameful! Yes alcholics and drug addicts are some of the best liars but, when you live with someone day to day to know when something is going on. I was married to a drug addict and at the time knew something was going on but, didnt know what. There is NO WAY this man didnt know his wife drank and smoked pot.

UGH so aggravating. Those poor babies :(

  • I just watched this today while Tracey was napping. With some fast forwarding I got through all but the last few minutes before she woke up. I thought I'd watch the end with her right there. Gah! I could not get to the remote fast enough. I did not know I'd be seeing pictures of Diane lying dead on the ground.

Yes, that was truly deplorable.  While I appreciate that the filmmaker obviously wanted the viewer to understand how horrible this tragedy was, I could have done without seeing three different shots of her dead body.

I would certainly freak if my children walked in and saw the still images on the TV.  I'm so sorry Tracey was right there - I should have stated in my original post that the movie had graphic images from the accident. I do apologize!

  • I think Diane snapped and decided she was pretty screwed if she stopped and took the heat, so she killed herself. Why she didn't leave the babies on the side of the road and just run her car into a tree and not another vehicle filled with people, who knows. I wonder if the surviving son will ever say anything.

I read an interesting theory that maybe her husband had just told her he was leaving her/cheating on her/ etc. right before she left, so she decided murder/suicide was a way to seek revenge.

On a somewhat related topic, Dear Zachary is streaming on Netflix. It's the kinda documentary that keeps you thinking about it for days.

I'm with BettyJoe on this one, there's just something not on the up and up about the whole situation - not just her closet alcoholism.
