As in bicycle-riders, not Hells Angels. ![]()
So I just got a bike that I would like to ride, mostly for exercise purposes and enjoyment. To be honest, I have always been a little scared of city biking but I am warming up to the idea. I got the bike mainly to ride on Schyukill path, but the more I think about it I would love to be able to come home after work and go for a ride. DH is in the process of getting one, so it would be nice to be able to take off from our house and ride somewhere.
I live in S. Philly just 2 blocks from Columbus Blvd, so I thought maybe we could ride along the river on the sidewalk? I see lots of people doing that.
Any other suggestions either in the city or outside the city for biking?
Re: biker peeps, lachute?
it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk in philadelphia.
however there is a bike lane right on columbus? bike lanes aren't scary and that one tends to be empty.
i would also be happy to ride with you around south philly if you want to get a feel for things one day after work.
We ride at John Heinz Wildlife Refuge in SW Philly--just a few minutes over the Passyunk Ave bridge. I really like it bc it's FLAT. My DH rides at FDR Park sometimes too.
Honestly, even if there's a bike lane, I wouldn't want my first biking experience to be on Del Ave. I could imagine that it might be rather intimidating.
I really suck at staying pregnant
Yes I am aware it's illegal
I admit I am a hypocrite, because I don't like bikers that ride on the sidewalks. I've almost killed a few coming out of my parking garage at work and just last week, I was coming out of my house with my little dog pulling me down my front steps and some guy is like, "WATCH OUT" on a bike. He almost ran me us over. So you are right, I should not ride on the sidewalks even on Columbus. I just figured the sidewalks are really wide, not to mention everybody does it. Not a good reason to do it though.
I would definitely take you up on that offer Lachute, I'm trying to get a sense of what roads have bike lanes because that's pretty much the only place I would feel safe if that makes sense.
Thanks rosemary for the tip on Wildlife Refuge, I'll check that out.
my dad rides around the lakes, (fdr park), probably not the most exciting but not as scary as Del ave

Phila police have been very proactive in pulling over cyclists and issuing tickets for doing exactly this.

600 were pulled over at the time of this report, and 10 of them were issued citations--7 of which were for sidewalk riding, which carries a fine of $50.
