H wants me to fly out to visit when his ship is in port around the halfway mark. I've got my passport, but I'm trying to figure out the logistics.
I assume he can't tell me where he is going until he gets there (at which point I'd buy overpriced last minute tickets and hop on a plane), but that poses some potential problems. What if I need a tourist visa? What if the country requires specific vaccinations? I've never been overseas so I'm not completely sure how this all works.
Has anyone flown out to see their S/O while they were in port? How did you manage it?

Re: Has anyone done this?
I know you've had other issues with the FRG, but do they have meetings you can go to? At the meetings for our ship the information is given out for upcoming ports and dates. It's always tentative, but everything from H's last deployment was accurate. If you don't have meetings, you could talk with the Ombudsman about it as well. She can't tell you anything over the phone, but she can in person. It should be known already what port that will be and roughly when.
I have not met H on a deployment, I only met him in Cali for a port. But I do plan on doing it this next deployment hopefully. There might be vaccines you need, but most of the areas that she ships go don't have any required vaccines, just recommended ones. Vaccines only take 10 days to 2 weeks to reach full immunity in your body though, so if you did decide to get something you could always get it within that time period before.
I've been to all the FRG meetings except one, and they have never mentioned where the ship is going to be or when.
I didn't think of asking the ombudsman, but I just sent her an email.
I'm really hoping this works out!

Ahh, ok. We are always given the dates and locations ahead of time, but a lot of commands don't like to take that risk with the information. There is a very good chance the Ombudsman will know, but can't share the information over the phone. So if she tells you she can't talk about it, just make sure you ask her at the next FRG meeting. She should attend all of those, or at least one of the Ombudsman if you have multiple for your command.
H is not in the Navy however, I can help with the tourist visa question. I work in immigration at a university. You can find a list of shots that are needed for each country on the CDC website and there is also a list of countries that we have a visa waiver program with on the State Department website. If the country is part of the visa waiver program you can enter as a tourist for up to 90 days without needing a visa.
Personally, I have traveled outside the US to some countries that the CDC recommends that we get shots to enter however, I have never gotten them and have been fine.

Hope this helps!
