Ready for the flames....

Okay so I was watching the Today Show (because as you know that is the best place to get your news from) and I was watching a clip of Kathie Lee and Hoda doing Zumba. I have heard people talking about Zumba before but I never saw it before. So after watching a clip of them doing a class, I am like WTF? Is it just Latin dancing? Dont get me wrong I love to dance salsa etc. I just cant believe that this guy is probably making millions of $$$ off of  something that people have been doing for years.

I am angry that I did not think of this idea. I mean, it looks like a fun way to exercise but it is not really a creative idea. KWIM?

  • Haha I think the same thing about bikram yoga. We've gotma heat index of 109 today. So basically I could do yoga outside and get the same "experience" for free.

  • Well, it's like any exercise that people pay huge amounts for classes.  You can do yoga alone at home, aerobics, pretty much anything that is taught in a class you can do on your own.

I'm not sure why you see it as so different from every other exercise class out there.  Anytime something different comes along people like to try it and if it's fun they stick to it.  Socialization is also a reason for going to classes over doing it at home.

  • It's just like any other exercise fad. Pick something that's been around and give it a new name (remember when kickboxing became "tae bo"?) and then make lots of money on videos and classes!
  • Zumba has been around for a few years, I don't understand the big fuss over it now. It is latin inspired but it is also bollywood, middle eastern, etc. It is also one of those classes where it can be super hard but it can be super easy also.

  • If I remember right, the guy who created Zumba said that one day he forgot his music for his aerobic class so he decided to put on some Latin music on.

I think it is great that people enjoy Zumba and have fun when they go to the classes.. I just think that it is crazy that he is making $$$$$ when it is Latin dancing mixed with a bit of aerobic.

It is like the whole clean eating diet. Of course, eating fruits and vegetbales is going to be better for you than processed food.

  • I think it has a cult following like Spin does.  Certain exercises just "click" with people.

I heard people dress up in crazy colors and spandex so that might be part of the draw.  It's always fun to have a reason to get cool clothes or dress up silly!

    Never done it though...

  • Zumba is fun and all, but it's really just jazzercise for the new millenium.  I don't get the appeal.  But maybe it was my teacher...

  • BTW, why would we flame you about Zumba? Am I underestimating this board's passion for exercise routines? :)
  • At least exercise fads are healthy ones. Smile

I haven't done a Zumba class but I used to take a lot of kickboxing, step aerobics, and pump classes and they'd rename them every half a year to make it seem "new and exciting," or "new and improved," but they were always the same.

I like the changes because they kept you on your toes and from getting bored.

No flames here. Hehe, but you're right.
