Yikes - background check!
I recently accepted and started a new job. Like most companies, this company performed a background check on me. I had to fill out some paperwork - prior positions, supervisor name, phone number, salary, when I graduated, etc etc - and the background check came back with an exception. For one employer, I rounded my salary up to the nearest hundredth - but my previous employer confirmed my *exact* salary. Now the difference was only $125 but that scared the holy heck out of me. Obviously the "exception" didn't matter because it was obviously rounding but this goes to show you SHOULD NOT EVER lie about salary information!!
Re: Yikes - background check!
I have never given it.
And companies have never had a problem with the omission of my salary.
THey're going to ask you what salary you are looking for, anyway -- and sometimes they'll say "We are only offering X a year; we cannot deviate from this figure. Is this acceptable? if yes, we will continue with the interview; if not, we will say goodbye."
You shouldn't lie about anything on your resume. It will only come back to bite you in the arse.
I'm glad it worked out OK for you.

Good piece of advice to job seekers!
As a hiring manager, the $125 difference would not have mattered to me. Now a lie that ranges in the thousands, might be a deal breaker.
This would also have come up as an issue in my company. If it was the only issue, not a problem. If it was one of others, then there would be greater weight given to it. We've rescinded offers over things like this. We're a very conservative company when it comes to stuff like this, and we strongly coach people filling out an application that accuracy is crucial.
