BR: Eating habits

Sometimes I wonder if my child is a freak... yes I said it. She has always eaten way more than the norm and now that she is well caught up on weight, I thought it would slow down. I got the report from the nanny the last two days and she eats like a pig- 6-8 ounces every 3-4 hours. She is only 12 weeks. Does this seem normal. I dont mind feeding her because she is visibly hungry but I am hoping she levels out or something or I will never be able to keep up.

I am pumping at work which is going well (although I lost my entire day's supply yesterday when the bag ripped) but I wonder how long this will stay this way.

How much did your little one eat or how much do they eat now?

Re: BR: Eating habits

  • Don't worry, my little man was quite a piggy himself.  By 3 months, he was having 8 oz at every feeding (3-4 hours). From talking to my friends, it is more than their little ones, but it was his norm.  He has always been a big boy(measuring big for weight and height).  My supply tanked at 6 months, so I called it quits.  At that point he was still having 6-8oz at every feeding.

If she is hungry, she is hungry.  I had my random worries that I was destining him to be a overweight child, but I wasn't going to starve him.  He is still in the higher %, but he is proportional with weight and height.  He doesn't eat just to eat and he lets me know when he is done.  I don't know if this is your worry, but just in case, a hungry baby doesn't equal a chubby kid :)

  • Every baby is different -- Charlotte sounds like my friends' baby.  He's 5 months younger than Sami and eating about double what she does right now.

I mean, so long as she's gaining weight, peeing, and you're pediatrician says everything is fine, I wouldn't be too concerned.  At this age they will eat what they need... yes, it might suck for you and having to keep up with feeding her and pumping and whatnot, but it is what it is, you know?

And your body will and should catch up with the demand... have you tried fenugreek?  I took it for a little bit and it definitely assisted with increasing my supply when I was BFing.

    Good luck!

  • At 3 months IMHO babies will not overeat.  Try not to stress over how much other babies eat or checking Google for feeding charts.  Nate just turned 7 mo.  and only drinks 6 oz every 3 hrs but his body weight is perfectly normal and nobody would accuse him of being a skinny baby.  Charlotte is doing just fine and btw I checked out your FB pics; what a beauty!

  • I totally understand how hard it is to not worry or compare them to other babies.  For what it's worth, Parker ate every two hours until he was 6 months old, and he was up at night too eating.  I agree with Jessica that they will not overeat, and know how much they need.  Charlotte looks great and is such a cutie!
  • yep, she's fine. your body will catch up - it's all about supply and demand. but, if it stresses you out or you feel like you cna't produce enough, there's no shame in supplementing.

     She's perfect! Don't worry.

  • She's totally fine. Nate did the same thing but since then really hasn't added any more. He's been averaging 6oz per feeding for 2 months or so.

My pedi said if they overeat- they spit it up. Their stomachs are only so big. So unless she's spitting 1/2 out after every feeding she's fine.

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...
