Question for the homeowners...

Hi ladies!

OK, hubby and I are saving for the down payment on our first place. It will be no sooner than two years, if we're lucky, but I already have a question for you... friends are telling me that I should make sure we buy where there is a good public school... Children are definitely in our future but frankly I don't see them happening in the next 7-8 years or so.

Are they right? How can I find out if there's a good school in Williamsburg?

TIA!

Re: Question for the homeowners...

  • Are you planning on staying in Williamsburg when you buy? There are alot of really beautiful new buildings there now.

What I ended up doing was a search through NYC BOE. They have stats on schools in your area, you can fine tune a search.

    Here's an example:

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker ...here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart I carry your heart(I carry it in my heart)
  • I think so, we really like it here! Actually, I'd love to buy the place we're renting now.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

  • Good schools attract good buyers. In general, it's also a good way to measure a neighborhood.  That means even if you don't want to have kids right away, it's indicative of the value of the area (and, therefore, your home).  Especially for resale, having a home in an area with better schools gives you an advantage.

We bought in a neighborhood that was family-friendly, close to public transportation, and surrounded by lots of nice stores/restaurants/amenities. I will never regret it.  Even if we don't want to stay here, we won't have any issues with selling our place.

  • Williamsburg is definitely 10x different than what it used to be, thats for sure. Do you guys do the flea market on the weekend? We like to go when the weather is nice.

There are so many beautiful new buildings that have been built recently. The only downside Id say about Williamsburg are the hipsters. LOL.

I have a friend who owns two restaurants in Wburg, and a couple of friends that live there - this one friend says she's woken up constantly by hipsters having "dance parties" in the middle of the sidewalk - in front of her building at like 3am. HILARIOUS.

  • It's true, the neighborhood should be kept as a priority to make a wise investment! I should really do more research about Williamsburg and maybe compare it to other areas of Brooklyn.

What I can say is that our street is definitely quiet and family friendly, it's also close to the subway and the commute to Manhattan is like 8 minutes on the L train. Considering that it's the summer it's been really quiet... no wild parties etc.

What a love about the place is that it's new, it's a duplex and has two bathrooms (yay). Although, I realize that it's not enough to make it a top candidate :)

Alisha - we've never been to the flea market... is it nice? where exactly is it?
