Ankeny pet owners

What vet do you use?  I've always taken our cats to the vet in my hometown, but it is about 20 minutes away.  DH suggested we find something closer because the ride is so stressful on the cats.  The one we've been going to has very affordable prices though, so I really want to find something comparable.  If you don't mind sharing, what do you pay for a routine exam and shots?

Re: Ankeny pet owners

  • We use Creature Comforts and love them.  Their hours are a total bonus too.  They are open 7am to 7pm 7 days a week.  It is so nice not to have to take time off to take them in.  Let me ask DH what we paid for the cat?  I can't remember.  I know dogs are likely much more.  But when we go in for the annual check-up and restock the meds (mind you 2 60lb dogs) of heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative (a years worth of each for each dog) its around $400?  Let me check on what the cats are?  I think you could call too and get a price estimate?

  • We've been going to Ankeny Animal and Avian since we moved to Des Moines about 5-ish years ago(we have cats and a dog).

We board our pup there and I love hearing how wonderful she is when we pick her up ;)   (they know what pet-mom's like to hear)  and they deal well with our one cat that get's really riled up just being in the office.

I'm not sure about cost of routine exams and such because we always end up with something extra like food or meds.

I think the last time we took our cat in, it was about $100 and that was an exam and some shots.  I just can't remember for sure.

  • We drive the dogs into DM to the Low Cost Spay Clinic on SE14th.  They do all of the shots and everything there.  They are open on Sat morning and that is usually when we go.
  • We have always gone to Creature Comforts and love them I just took our dog in yesterrday for her shots the exam is 34 i think it's the same for cats and each of the shots were $15.50. Not sure if cost is diffrent for cats.  I don't know if that is low cost or not it's the only place we have ever gone, but we love the saff.

  • We also go to Ankeny, Animal and Avian Clinic.  We love it - we've boarded there and our dog also had 2 surgeries there and all experiences have been positive.  No clue on the cost - however, I do know on their website there is a $25 coupon for new clients.

  • Its not in Ankeny but we go to Polk City Vet in Polk City.  It's a good friend's uncle and he is awesome and VERY reasonable.  I called around and his prices were lower than everyone in DSM metro (not sure how Ankeny compares).  Anyway, we've been going to him for 9 years and the drive is worth it to us...and Ankeny is much closer to PC!
  • Growing up we always used Dr Faulkner. I'm not sure what vet he is at but he is great. The other great vet is out on 18th street right by the high school (now called Northview Middle School ....not the old Northview which is now Prairie Ridge....so to be confusing). The clinic is right across 18th from Dahl's.
  • i take my cat to a place in wdm despite living in ankeny just because it's easier to stick with them. (my cat is not exactly a fan of new people)

anyways - my sister uses creature comforts and likes them a lot. my parents take their dogs to the vet in polk city as well and haven't had any issues.

  • I really like Creature Comforts as well as Ankeny Veterinary Clinic. They both do a very good job in my opinion.

  • When we lived in Ankeny we took our dog to Village Vet on Merle Hay Rd. in Johnston. We also lived on the SW side of Ankeny so it was pretty close to our house. We were always pretty pleased with their care and boarding service.
