Took Kyle to the allergist today...

And, he wasn't allergic to any of the things they tested. They did the scratch test on his back, and tested components that were in the lasagna, including cow milk, goat milk (just in case), oregano and basil, since that is the only thing he'd eaten seconds before his rash/swelling outbreak. And, they also tested grass and tree pollen since he had been playing outdoors (not in our yard) only a couple hours before his hives outbreak. Negative on all counts.

I'm relieved, and also not. Great to rule these things out, but then what was it that caused these reactions? Kyle had just gotten off a 10-day treatment w/ Amoxicillin for a double-ear infection only the day before he got hives. He could have developed an allergy to that (although the allergist said it's unusual to develop an allergy after only the first course of the drug). But, as drugs age, they degrade and turn into other things, any number of which he *could* be allergic to.

I'll be asking to get myself tested come the fall, since I don't know my own triggers for hives. Maybe if I get answers, it will help him too.

Re: Took Kyle to the allergist today...

  • It was my understanding that allergy testing by skin tests before age 3 is very inconclusive. You will get false negatives, and false positives, because the child hasn't had enough exposure to the potential allergens. This was according to both our allergist and our pediatrician.  They did do a blood test to test for allergies but said to wait on the skin test until DS was older.

I hope Kyle doesn't have any more episodes of hives til they figure out what caused them !

  • I was surprised that they did the skin test today. I fully expected bloodwork to be done. Oh well. I guess I will just keep monitoring him.

  • I was wondering when he was going & how y'all would make out.

I'm sorry you didn't get any conclusive answers though =(

Drug allergies are a pita, imo. I keep finding new ones that I'm allergic to. The half life on some of them is unbelievable for them to be able to cause reactions.

  • Sorry for no answers :-( But as a person with really random allergies, i can tell you sometimes it's hard to figure it out. I have spent many years with occasional hives/edema and after bazillions of tests there is no answer. Sometimes I just have a strong reaction to the same old things I'm allergic to - grass, pollen, animals. Sometimes I'm fine. Completely and totally sucks. I hope there's an answer for both of you.

  • I am the exact same as you with my allergies, Michele. I've experienced completely random outbreaks of hives, etc. and have no clue what my triggers are. I will be asking to go through the battery of tests this autumn though. Hopefully I'll get some answers for myself, and will be able to help out my little guy in the process.

  • Sorry you didn't get any answers, but at same time at least he's not allergic to some of those things you mentioned (well, hopefully nothing comes up in the future).  I had to add my recent experience with DD, her skin reaction and our recent visits to dermos.  DD had broken out with a rash on only a portion of her neck face, one side and we had no clue why, went to dr when we couldn't get rid of it ourselves, then treatments by dr several times were unsuccessful and rash was spreading to diff places (more on neck, arm, shoulder, when left one side face went to other side and bit in belly).   I was really bervous b/c the meds were not working until she finally got a stronger steroid from first dermo (not a pedi, but one who would see us right away b/c this was going on for awhile w/ no relief) and other steriods and meds not working.  same steriod on face and stronger worked on neck, arms, body...keeping fingers crossed it stays away.  But my whole point (long drawn out one..lol) was that both reg and pedi dermos said she could have had a virus that never really went away (why hers kept coming back) and caused reaction to somerthing simple that may have touched her skin that would normally not have reacted to.  They said she could develop a skin reaction if she was going to get sick or a fever  (which she has now, has had a 103 for 2 days now..poor thing, but no rash- completely forgot dermo said this untl typing).  I know his weer hives, but you had said he was on meds for ear infect just caught my attention.  You never know if this could have been what DD's dermos were talking about with being sick and getting a ski reaction to being sick. oh, both drs had asked me if she was on meds (like antibiotics or anything liek that too).  Just something to thing about since all the skin tests came back neg and sharing my info from recent experience at dr too (although I have no clue sometimes what they tell you is true, but sounds good when you are there- ha!).
