Re: in random postings - I don't understand "Tom's" shoes

  • I have only heard of them on TN and I know no one IRL who wears them.

Which brings me to a related confession. I cannot take the Vibram shoes seriously. I know, I know, people swear by them, but I still giggle at everyone who wears them.

  • I just looked at the Toms website thinking there had to be a cute pair on there, but no. they are all hideous. It's cool they do the charity thing though.

  • Some of them are fug and some of them I think are really cute.  DH has these brown boots that he wears all the time and says that they are the most comfortable shoes he owns.  I really like the personal message too of the company and the story abotu how the comopany got started.  I don't mind paying a lot for shoes when I know that it will go to a good cause.

  • ITA on the ugliness of Toms... I don't see the appeal at all. However, I agree w/Trish that I do appreciate their mission, and while I would never buy a pair b/c I think they're hideous, I do think it's great that those that choose to buy are also helping people in need.
  • I had to google Toms because I've never heard of them...Not the ugliest shoes I've ever seen but they aren't very cute at all.

  • I think they're ugly too.

And I've heard that their mission, while well-intentioned, actually has a very negative impact, so it's not as great as it sounds.  It hurts local economies and local textile industries, as counter-intuitive as that may seem.

Me too and they are not cute at.all!

I like the mission of the company, but it's going to take more than that for me to buy those.

    Visit The Nest!
  • they sell them at Nordstrom and I have seen people wearing them out and about.  I think w/ some outfits they can work, but I think they look so flimsy and cheaply made- I don't like buying shoes that look like they will fall apart in just a season of wearing- IMO that is environmentally irresponsible and undoes the good act of giving a pair of shoes away.

They totally remind me of these mesh slipper shoes you could buy in Chinatown in NYC for like $3 a pair- for a hot second on the knot they were the shoes brides changed into and sometimes bought pairs for all of their BMs to change into as well.  I can't lie- I totally had a pair that I would shuffle to work in sometimes, or wear to walk Daisy around the block.

  • They're cloth shoes that they sell at a 1000% mark up - they SHOULD donate a significant portion of they profits. Really - their success is all about marketing!

  • They are ugly to me and I agree, I don't think they would last very long.

  • Just visiting your board from Boston. (I grew up in MD and my fabulous sister is a Baltimore Nestie....)

I saw this post and had to jump in. Not only do I think they are silly looking, but I tried a pair on and I found them rather uncomfortable. I don't understand ugly shoe trends... crocs, ughs, toms... Make them all go away!

Hope everyone in Baltimore is doing well!

OMG- was it The Warrior Emporium downtown? We used to do that too.  That place was a little skevy, but the prices were cheap, cheap, cheap, especially compared to the Jade Gallery in Hunt Valley Mall.

  • I had never seen them until these boards and I agree that they are fugly. They don't even look comfortable either.
  • The wedges don't look bad... but I wonder if they are comfortable.

  • I am of the other camp and LOVE Toms. I have two pairs and they are very comfortable and I think there is cuteness in the ugliness, if that makes sense. Stick out tongue They have lasted a good while, and I wear them a lot. They are a bit pricey, but I appreciate their mission and also appreciate that they are eco-friendly.

  • They are fug and Becky is absolutely right.  There is this thing in the US where we think people in developing countries should have all the junk we don't want (like T-shirts claiming the losers are the Super Bowl Champions) plus all this charity in the forms they actually DON'T need.  People in developing countries need education, clean water, medicine, bed nets and a billion other things (mostly $$) that they CAN'T produce.  They DO have a textile industry that is severely crippled by all our well-intentioned charity.  Tom's shoes may give one person something to put on their feet but they are keeping others from making a viable living.  If Tom really wanted to help, he would send them insecticide-treated bed nets, tetracycline and go teach school.

I looked into said wedges because they come in size 12 but decided against them.
