Question regarding base of choice after hardship tour...
My DH is set to do a 12 mn hardship tour and was told afterwards we will be able to move to our "base of choice" domestic or overseas. I was just curious if that is something they do, or just tell you? Or does it end up being...you have a choice between TX or VA...along those lines?
Thanks we are really new to this and were not at all expecting his first PCS to be overseas!

My brother went on a 12 month (turned into 17 month) tour and got his base of choice then changed that base and got what he wanted again. I hear it happens and they try to make it happen if there is a spot available at that base for that MOS/rank/rating.
H was supposed to get base of choice after his last duty, and didn't. But there weren't any openings there for his rank/rate.
One thing that they are at least good about is that you can switch coasts easily after a hardship tour. Now they are limiting the cross country moves for most SMs, but after a hardship tour they let you.
Well, I could be wrong, but I assume it's similar to arduous sea duty in the Navy. H is currently considered on arduous duty because of how close this coming deployment is to the last one, and that there is a move involved with it as well.
Also, some shore duties in the Navy that are hard to fill will get you anywhere you want after, like recruiting duty or boot camp.
Like PPs, it all depends where in the opening is for the rate/rank.
H was supposed to at least get his choice of coast since he's stationed overseas, this was even stated in his previous orders, but we didn't even get that because there weren't any spots open for his rate/rank anywhere else but Norfolk, so now that is where we are going,
First, you dont just get to choose any old base. There has to be an available slot for your DH to go into. So your DH will be given a set of options to choose from.
Second, having a hardship tour does not gurantee getting yout base of choice. My DH was a SMSgt when he had his last hardship tour. We were promised one base and three months out of return, we were "diverted" to another base.
Third, depending on your DH's MOS and what happens in his hardship tour, they (mother military) could change their minds as well.
Look at the list, put down where you want to go and pray...but do not rely on it.
I actually think this is the BEST time to go overseas! You do not have kids, so you can pick up and go! You are younger and healthier, so you can do those massive ITT tours or backpack without worrying about your brusitis.
And you can see everything and then go back for the more indepth visits at a later date. This is my issue, being 40, we only have so much time to do it all...with little option for the do-overs.

Almost everyone I know from H's last location (which was a 1 year remote, so in that "first choice" segment) got their 1st or 2nd choice.
Yes, the job has to be available, but if it is, you have a really good chance of getting one of your requests. AFPC at least looks at people coming off remote assignments first before going to people moving from a regular tour.
We ended up getting our 2nd choice location, but it was for an unadvertised job which was actually H's 1st choice job that he was all bummed about not being available when we made the request.
