What was your last bill?
I hear reports on TV and from friends about really high bills. We just got our bill and was only $175. It is not that much higher than last year and we are keeping it a little cooler this year too.
Re: Electric bill
We used on our last bill a similar amount of electricity as last August but the bill was higher than last August's bill, as far as I remember.
I think our a/c unit is not on it's last leg, but it's crying for help a little bit.

$247.99. We've been using a ton more electricity than last year.
Ours was around $300. I was afraid to say that at first but now that some others have put up similar numbers I don't feel quite so bad!
And I keep it at 78. That poor a/c unit just runs and runs during the hottest part of the day.
Ours last month was $168. I expect this month's bill to be much higher.
I keep ours set at 81 when no one's home and 79 (sometimes 77) when we're home. Our A/C unit also runs just about nonstop at these settings- even when it was "only" in the 90s out. I don't think it could handle keeping the house much cooler. It has a label on it from 1988, so it's probably near its last legs.
We live in a 1500 sq ft, 3 bedroom house, but our house is very new. It was built in 2009 and is an energy star certified house. Our heating and cooling bills have been cheaper here then in our 1 bedroom apartment we lived in before.
We keep the A/C at 78 during the day, 75 when we come home, and 68 at night. When we build our forever house I am definitely springing for the upgrade to energy star.

June's bill was $65.40 for just electric [city combines electric/water/sewer etc., so total bill was $110]. Lower than last summer...I was totally expecting a total bill of $150+. Haven't gotten the bill for July usage yet, and I'm kinda scared. I'm expecting close to double electric from June, even though I was gone for a week out of the month.
Side note: I live in a nearly 1100 square foot apartment. My thermostat is off, so I set it between 80-82 and at 85 while we're not home. I also run the fan in my room at night so the A/C isn't on all the time.
$250, highest it's ever been and we keep it at 77. But like a PP said, our A/C is about to go out. We are going to put a new one in next spring, we just have to make it through the rest of the summer.
DH and I bicker about the A/C, I'd rather spend a little extra money and be comfortable where as he would keep it at 78-80 if I'd let him.
Our air conditioner is original to our house - our house was built in 1975, I think. We have a home warranty so I am hoping the damn thing breaks down SOON so we can get a new one.
What we do is shut the vents in the entire house with the exception of the bedrooms. This has helped us to keep our bill low.
Our is actually not much different than what we usually pay. It's about $160 or less. I can't believe some of the reports I've been hearing about people having $300 or more bills.
ETA: We live in a 1600 sq. ft. house that was built in 2008. We keep it at 76 when we aren't home and then lower it to about 71 when we are.
Missing our little turkey.

Ours was $247; June's was $288 - bleh! I was so upset!! In June, we had the temp set at 76 day/night, and we raised it in July to 78.
We live in a 1200sf house from 1948, and we've done major remodeling to make it more efficient (and habitable), but there's not much more we can do without dropping major money. : (
