X/P: 8 days in Europe in Nov

I'll (likely) be joining the hubz at the end of a work trip in Paris.  I'll have a day or so there to explore, then we're looking to move on.  I haven't been to a lot of European countries, so I'm still at the 'major cities' level. Depth in each place isn't my top priority-- I'm looking for an overview/flavor.  We aren't opposed to a river cruise if it fits our travel dates.

Anywhere but: Greece, Vienna, Prague, Belgium, London

Where would you suggest?

Ready... go!

Re: X/P: 8 days in Europe in Nov

  • Edinburgh, Scotland - maybe my favorite place on earth (but it was become a little more touristy since I lived there)

Dublin, Ireland - has turned into a great vibrant city!  Check out Bobbly Flay's Tour of Ireland.  He finds a lot of great restuarants

    Tuscany

    Provence

  • In October, we started in Paris then did train to Bayeux (Normandy ? wonderful little town), back to Paris to fly to Munich, overnight then train to Salzburg (loved, loved, loved), train to F?ssen (Neuschwanstein castle), then train back to Munich to actually "do" Munich (uh, beeeeer). We loved every moment. If any of those places interest you, I'm happy to provide more info and/or pictures. :)

Next on our list is Iceland.

  • I'd probably go to the beaches in Croatia, and then Hungary.

    Italy would be fun, too.

I've always wanted to go to Finland and Russia, too.

You're into scuba diving, right?  Looks like there are some places to dive near England, IReland, and Scotland...

Besides Italy, are these places OK in November?  Off-season, but maybe raining, chilly?

Why oh why can't I just quit my job and travel so I can go everywhere????

Oh, good point.  It's probably farking freezing in all of those places in November.  bah!

  • Just remembered Bruges, Belgium.  A wonderful little city.  A (full) day would work there.  I took the train from Paris.

Moscow doesn't start getting bad until Nov.  The wind off the river goes to the bone!  But, if you are time constrained, I would stay closer in Western Europe and plan a 10 day trip through the former USSR.  There are so many great cities to visit!

  • the weather in november will be crisp in most of those places. UK & ireland were similar or a little warmer than NYC at that time.

and ditto on wishing i could quit working and just travel full time time *sigh*

    What about Spain?

Definitely an option. Neither of us have been.  What would you suggest for 7 nights?

  • I just also wish I could quit my job and travel.  One day.

Salzburg was absolutely wonderful.  Depending on when you go in November, you may be able to catch Christmas festivals or some great concerts, if those are your things.  Salzburg is like concert central in the summer.  (I'm thinking more classical, but I'm pretty sure there is music for everyone)

  • Salzburg is LOVELY but if you are nixing Vienna you will likely need to focus on Germany and add in travel time to get to Salzb. It's Mozart's birthplace, so lots of focus on him, but also parts of the Sound of Music were filmed there.

Ireland is fine in November. I went late Oct/early Nov and was comfortable in a long sleeve top (not sweater) and a fleece jacket. Some days, I didn't even need the jacket. (Caveat - we didn't get to Northern Ireland but I can't imagine a huge temp diff) It's not as lush in the fall like you'd picture Ireland to be, but it is still beautiful.

  • I would go to Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia.

My DH has been to Barcelona.  They saw the Antoni Guadi stuff, several museums like a chocolate museum and a Picasso museum which had great shops nearby, they went to the beach.  They spent a few days in Barcelona and then moved on.

DH said Nice France would be a great change from Paris but that time of year it might not be so great.  They did Nice and hopped over to Monaco for the day (it's cheaper to stay in Nice and just visit Monaco)
