Do you prewash charm packs?

When I do a quilt I usually prewash my fabric, but I didn't know if I should prewash a charm pack.....and then have to iron every little square.  :/

Thanks!

Re: Do you prewash charm packs?

  • I only prewash fat quarter and larger.  I rarely buy fabric without a specific project in mind, so I don't have an issue with using washed fabrics with unwashed.

  • I don't, but I don't prewash anything unless I am making a garment.  I put my scraps all together & have never had a problem, so don't worry!  I do throw a Shout Color Catcher in though, the first time I wash something if it hasn't been prewashed.

  • I normally prewash, but I just did a quilt with a charm pack, and I didn't prewash.  It seemed like too much work!

  • I don't prewash any of my fabric.  The owner of the local quilt store talked me out of pre-washing.  If you are buying quality fabric, it shouldn't be an issue.  Not trying to sound snobby..

I'll respectfully disagree.  I sew clothes and the quality 100% cotton fabric still shrinks.  If you are quilting, then I think most of you like the effect you get from some shrinkage.  If you are sewing clothes, you HAVE to either prewash, or be aware that the finished garment will shrink some.

I made a Moda charm pack skirt for LA.  I did NOT prewash (it seemed like too much work), and it did shrink.  Luckily, "short" skirts are more acceptable on 2yo girls!

  • As PP eluded to, the general "rule" I follow is to prewash fabrics for clothing and not prewash fabrics for home decor or quilting projects.
  • Thanks everyone!
