Teacher nesties ?

I'm doing a research paper for my computer science class about the intergration of computers in elementary classroom. I'm hoping to get some of your first hand experience. I was hoping to get information on how you intergrate  techonolgy into your lesson plans, if you think it is beneficial to your students, and if you think that the use of computers is an advantage or disadvatage to your students learning process.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Re: Teacher nesties ?

  • I teach middle school... does that count??

I use technology every single day in my classroom.  I have a SmartBoard, which is the coolest thing ever.  It's an interactive whiteboard, so the kids can write on it and interact with the internet and other computer activities in front of the classroom.  I use it every day to put up the daily journal and to do some grammar work, which the SmartBoard makes more fun because you can design your own interactive games using some of the programs that come with the board.

I also teach my students how to become good researchers, so the internet is essential to this. While we also learn how to use books for research, I know that they will use the internet more so we spend a lot of time focusing on how to find reliable information by doing research scavenger hunts and things like that.

Although I love technology and think it's more beneficial than not, I think it can be sort of counterproductive at times.  For example, due to the "cell phone age," a lot of my students don't understand how to write a good sentence or write certain words without using text language.

  • I teach Kg in a county that is VERY forward in having technology in the classroom.

In the elementary schools every classroom has 5 Mac laptops. We also have two classroom set carts with 30 Macs in each for each school. Newer schools have Promethean boards (the interactive boards that aweilba mentioned in the pp) in each classroom. The school I'm at is older and has at least one Promethean board per grade level. The county is trying to make it so there are boards in every classroom in every school...but they're expensive so it's gonna take a while. ;-) This year Kg and 1st grade classes will be getting iPads in their classrooms as well.

In the middle and high schools, each student has a Dell laptop. The county also supplies a laptop to each teacher...which is the computer I always use at home. :-)

Now...I use my classroom laptops everyday in center rotations. We play games for language arts, math, and science on them. We also have technology lessons at least once a month. Since the county is big on technology, they have a list of things that they would like for each grade level to master. My team member across the hall has our grade level Promethean board and we join her class at least once every two weeks (if not more) to do joint lessons on the interactive board.

I love having so much technology available at my fingertips for the young ones. I agree with aweilba in her statement about the disadvantages in grammar that technology seems to be producing. However, hopefully starting them with so much technology so young will help curb that disadvantage. :-)

How are you planning on using the iPads with your students?
