Great Ape Trust?

Has anyone ever toured this?  Is it appropriate for kids to go to?

I have our annual sisterless slumber parties coming up with our three nieces (8 years old, 5 years old, and a 3 year old)  I cant decide if they would think it was stupid or if it's way too mature for them to go to?  I dont know anyone that has ever been to this before.

Any other ideas for activities would be great!

Re: Great Ape Trust?

  • I don't think you can just visit the GAT.  their website wasn't specific, but I had a former co-worker's DH work there, and I think she said you had to be a member, and over a certain age so you didn't frighten the apes.  It might be best to call them to confirm though.  It would be awesome to see the apes, as former co-worker told great stories about them-she and her family got to visit the apes as employee bonus.

  • Yeah I read on their website you call to arrange tours but it also said they only have about 1500-2000 visitors each year.  So it probably wouldn't pan out anyway... I'm just really trying to think of different things to do with them.

  • Some ideas:

    Jester park naturescape

    science center

children's museum in IA City + shopping?

I imagine it IS hard to find an activity for that span of ages.

  • Mrs.Reem had some good ideas! I will say that you have to be a member to go to the GAT and as interesting as it is, I do not think it would hold the attention of any kid very long. Heck, it almost lost my attention. It is cool to see the interaction, but the bonobos and the orangutans have to be in the mood to 'entertain' or no observing. Kind of weird, but I am sure you have read the articles about Dr. Sue, they are her children and they throw temper tantrums and all!
