whopping cough vaccine

Hi ladies! :)

So I was wondering, when you guys had your little ones did you, your significant other or anyone planning to be around the baby a lot get the whopping cough vaccine? I had never really heard that much about it until the other day. I plan on asking the doctor about it and see what her opinion is. Thanks so much! :)

Re: whopping cough vaccine

  • If you have a current Tentnious(sp?) shot you can't get it. My DH had a shot about a year ago however he got the version that had whopping cough vaccine in it.  Our Doctor only said he should get it. The only other person I would ask if someone in the family is watching the baby all the time.  I will get mine at some point during this pg (not looking forward to it)

  • Before Mini started kindergarten last fall, I got a dose of Tdap but it was for my own protection. Like August mentioned, unless someone is in close contact with your child on the regular and is at risk of being exposed to it him/herself, I wouldn't worry about it. Also, it hurt like a mothereffer. LOL
  • I got it last year at the advice of the health department even though I'm no where near having baby.  DH and I both got it.  They told us the hospital gives it to new mothers after the birth and anyone else in close contact should get it.  Since I got it already I just need a booster shot every 10 years.  Like Margie said, it hurts like a mother.   I had dead arm for about a week.

  • I got it last year b/c I wanted to be up to date if I got pg.  DH still hasn't gotten it yet, though, so I have to harass him further.

  • I got it with Jack.  DH had it.  My mom went and got it after Jack was born, and my dad is getting it at his check up.  I believe ILs also have it.  I didn't ask them.

  • Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate the help! :) I have to say shots dont bother me but im not a fan when they hurt days after lol
  • If it's been more than two years since you've had a tetanus shot they will give you the dtap after birth. Prior to two years pertussis was not part of the tetanus vaccine. But after you get it, it will be good for ten years. I will be getting one after birth and my husband, mom, dad and mother in law got the vaccination.

  • Yep, we both (DH and I) got the whooping cough vaccine at the 6 week post-partum visit.  Also, the Tetnis shot (because it had been over 10 years before either one of us received one).  How are you feeling? I'm very excited for you- so close!

  • thanks so much ladies! :)

Summerbride- im doing good. Thanks so much for asking :) I know, I cant believe how close we are! It doesnt seem possible! :) Im so excited and ready to meet our little girl finally!

  • They offered to give it to me in the hospital right after I delivered my daughter. I had the Tdap last year anyway, but it was available if I needed it. It's pretty important for parents and caregivers to have and they kind of push it in the hospitals now I think.
