new fed telework policies?

Who knows more about these?

I just became a fed in May, and someone at my agency just found out that I'm not supposed to be teleworking my first year of employment. Oops. Because I definitely am and have been on a regular basis. Am I going to get in trouble? Is this seriously an issue? My supervisor doesn't seem to know about this policy and I don't really want to mention it . . .

Re: new fed telework policies?

  • I wouldn't make it an issue until your supervisor does!  :)

The April OPM guidance (and a bunch of other stuff) is on telework.gov

  • Did you complete a telework agreement with your supervisor?  We do those at the beginning of each calendar year stating that we can telework once a pay period and on an "as needed with supervisor approval" basis.  I think if you have the agreement in place/on file then it's ok.

I did. I do it once a week, which is fine according to our office policy.

  • I would ask your HR what the telework policy is.  You don't have to say "I've been teleworking but I heard that I'm not supposed to," etc.  Just ask what the policy is and then determine if you should approach your supervisor about it to make any changes.  I would imagine since you have been teleworking successfully for a few months, and you have the agreement in place, they wouldn't make a stink about it.  I was teleworking in my first year as a fed, and I had the telework agreement in place.

  • OPM doesn't decide, your agency does.  For instance, my agency telework directive says you can't telework the first year of employment, and we think that's crap, so the union is trying to change it.

Your agency may not have a specific policy about it at all, which is maybe why nobody has noticed.  But it's not government-wide.  The OPM Telework Act of 2010 has some info, as does the guide to the Act.  Telework.gov is a good site.
