Adopting (not BR)

DH and I talked about it and we have decided to adopt a puppy :). I have to wait till after deployment so we can go together. I have a soft spot for the older dogs that haven't had it easy and/or don't have as a good a chance of finding a forever home, but I'm sure I'll have to compromise and get one under 2 years old. Regardless, I'm super excited. We were thinking a lab or retriever since they are easier to train.

  • Dogs who are over two are very possible to train.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Awwww yay! I am with you on adopting an older dog.  I got wiley when he was 1 and man for a time there it was tough (lots of chewing).  We got Bella when she was 2 and she has some anxiety issues so she occassionally chewed but nowhere near as much as Wiley.  Plus there was minimal potty training both of them! All i had to do was teach them to go to the door when they wanted out and it only took a week or so for that to catch on.  Not all dogs are like that though.

Oh and this Bella was super easy to train and we teach her new tricks as much as we can.

ETA: this is our experience and not every dog will be easy to train no matter how old they are because of their breed.

  • Hopefully you are able to find a dog that suits both of you. When we adopted our cats DH wanted kittens and I wanted older cats. We ended up with a pair of 1 year old cats and it has worked out well.

I'm kind of confused by this. What do you mean? Do you mean some dogs are untrainable because of their breed?

  • I've never heard labs and retrievers are easier to train, but they are generally very high energy.

I think she means that some dogs are hard to train regardless. I know for us Simon still has some potty issues at 8 months but not many and the chewing as stopped. But he is so ADD that training is rough some days. He comes a lot better to the phrase " Lets go!" then to "Simon Come". But little dogs can be challenging.

OP that is very exciting and GL to you!

I totally agree with this. Every lab we have ever had was super high energy.

I think any dog can be trained. All I said was labs and retrievers are easier to train. Granted some may be a little more difficult but I personally think that has to do with their own individual personalities... I had one pup that was a huge pain because he was so darn picky about everything (I found out later he came from a puppy mill so that may have played a part in his training process... he only lived a couple years Sad)

It has been a while since ive had a Lab, I remember them being energetic, but I never had one that was difficult to train. It may have just been luck, I just hope the pup wont be hard to potty train

In my experience bigger dogs are easier to potty train. We have a min doxie ( see picture) he had some issues when we got him that had to be addressed so potty training was challenging but he is doing much better now.

  • Poncho was 14 months when we got him. He has been harder to train but he has still come a long way since we got him. Kiki was 3 1/3 when we got her and she has been a piece of cake to train. She knew several tricks when we got her, but she's really smart and picked up on things quickly. Don't knock the older dogs because they definitely are still trainable!

  • Sorry guys I meant pretty much what Afton said.  You can still train dogs but some breeds/dogs are just harder to train because they are stubborn.    Our border collie is high energy so be careful when you pick a dog that they match your lifestyle.  We take our dogs a lot of places and on a ton of walks (despite the fact that we have yard).  There is also a lot of fetch in our backyard when we are home.  We don't mind but if you don't have a hugely active lifestyle then a high energy dog would probably not be for you.
  • Both of ours were over a year when we got them.  Our female was very easy to potty train however, she was not that easy to train.  She is a very willful dog and wants to be the HBIC and that is something that has not changed.  She wants to do things her way.  Needless to say that once "cookies" were added she was much better with the training.  She will do anything for a beggin strip.  She does however, have to remain in her kennel when she is home alone since she just can not help herself and will get into things.  I have even caught her in the middle of something and she looks like she knows what she is doing is wrong she just wants to do it so bad she can't help herself.

The male was much eaiser to train however, he has issues of being left alone.

So I guess the moral to this story, every dog is different and mine have issues.  HAAA Big Smile

    Stop saying that.
