Weekend Trip from London (Driving)

Hello ladies, DH and I would like to get out of the city this weekend...  We're planning on renting a car and we'd like to go anywhere 2-3 hours away.  DH is picturing beaches, castles, and villages.  We'd like to shy away from the larger cities since we can do those by train.  Any ideas?

Bonus points for specific dog friendly hotel or B&B recommendations as we'll be bringing along our little guy ;)

Re: Weekend Trip from London (Driving)

  • We are on our way to Somerset next weekend. I always love going to Somerset/Devon. Maybe even check out the Jurassic Coast (although I think thats Dorset). I don't have any hotels/B&B's to recommend because we always just take our tent and go camp. Maybe have a look at Lyme Regis, Chard, Axminister, Honiton out that way.

  • While the beaches tend to be rocky, I really loved the southern bit of Suffolk.  We stayed in a dog friendly B&B, but we booked it out months in advanced.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • I asked this a few post down.... we want to go somewhere in the next month for a weekend. The places that seem to get a lot of votes are New Forest and the Cotswolds. I still haven't decided what we're going to do because I haven't done the touristy things like Stonehenge or Bath, either. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

  • Cornwall is absolutely beautiful.  I stayed in St. Ives when I went (years ago so don't remember a hotel rec).  It's really neat, because it's on the jet stream it has tropical vegetation like palm trees and bouganvillea and stuff.

Also, Suffolk and Norfolk are lovely.  Southwold (in Norfolk) is an adorable seaside town (matched up with my lifelong "vision" of what an English seaside town looked like) and is home to Adnam's brewery.  Lowestoft is not as picturesque but has some fun amusements along the boardwalk and a theme park.

There is neat stuff all along the A12 to stop and enjoy the farm shops, pubs and/or scenery.

  • Thanks for the recommendations.  I also checked out amwallace's post below and got more ideas.  When we have a plan, I'll come back and update :)
