Warning: Sometimes the internet is wrong

I don't care what some websites say but using a Steam Mop to clean hardwood floors is a bad idea. Just ask the woman who has to replace 1000+ square feet of cherry flooring who called my job asking for advice last week. I felt so sorry for her.

Re: Warning: Sometimes the internet is wrong

  • Yeah, I'm guessing she didn't pay attention to the warning about making sure the floors are properly sealed before steam cleaning them.  That's an expensive lesson to learn.

  • But the internet told her she could. And the flooring in question is about $11/sq foot not including installation so yeah...
  • She should have gone with oak.  LOL.

  • oh my!!! I have a shark steam thing and i never use it because its a pain in the ass to use. I just stick with swifter wet cloths.  Guess I really wont be breaking that thing out now, we have all hardwood except for bathroom and kitchen,  dont need that added expense to replace our floors.

  • That's why you do a test patch in the closet so if it fuucks up you don't ruin the entire floor. Duh!
  • Omg!! A friend of mine just did this in their new house.... And she has to have the whole floor refinished.... In our old house in POK.. The hardwood floors had just been refinished before we moved in.... So they were sealed well.. But I still never used the steam mop on them in fear of that!

  • Ouch. Glad you wrote this.  I need to tell DH.  A couple of days ago he cloroxed our unsealed marble floor in the new bathroom.  Sometimes I think he fails massively at cleaning on purpose so I don't ask him to do it.
