I need a rec for a tattoo artist
I need a clean studio and a great artist. I'm taking my mom to get a tattoo and I don't want to freak her out so I need things to be clean, comfortable, safe and an artist that will work with us on her simple design. Anything I should tell her about ankle tattoos? This is her first and I don't have experience to share with her. Thanks!
Re: I need a rec for a tattoo artist
My tattoo guy moved to Japan, so I don't have any personal recs and I haven't tried the new guy DH is using. I know the shop is down Highway 6 and the guy is light handed.
I hear the ankles hurt because it is bony. I have one on my foot and I heard it would be painful, but it wasn't, so not sure if the same is true for an ankle.
I saw Gabriel Massey at Scorpion tattoo, after a rec from another friend whose tat was gorgeous. I am so happy with mine--The design I wanted was very fine lined and sharp, and he was able to do it perfectly and while being professional and fun to talk to.
Also, I had originally wanted my design on one part of my ankle but he wouldn't do it bc he said that area looks bad within a few years due to the way the skin is there. I could have gone higher..but I didn't want to so I just stuck with my foot.

If a day trip to CS is a possibility, I highly recommend Arsenal Tattoo on 2818. It is very clean and the owner, Cliff Collard, has a beautiful, impressive portfolio. DH recently got a tattoo there by another artist, Andres, who has a Bachelors in Allied Health from TAMU. DH brought a few ideas and pictures of inspiration to Andres and Andres created an awesome, large, intricate piece for DH. It was exactly what DH had in mind. The piece has lots of fine lines and Andres tattooed them perfectly. He is very humble and open to asking for Cliff's assistance and input as well.
I will say Ciff usually has a wait list of several months but it may be worth calling. Also, a smaller tattoo place may be more comfortable for your mom. Definitely don't equate small town with shady tattoo shop because this place is completely legitimate, clean, and professional.

And here are some other recs for Arsenal from a B/CS forum:

Yeah, I got one on my ankle and it was a bit more uncomfortable with it being on the bone. I actually had to redone a few years later and that area still seemed tender.
No recs on any artists, I got them done in Canada and Austin.

I third it; It's where I got my first tattoo and it was a great experience. Their shop is clean and everyone was very nice.
Do you need an appt? Do you need to take a design in with you? I have it in my head and need them to draw it for her. Yes...I'm designing my mom's tattoo
I will say that it depends. I did not make an appointment but I also was not wanting/expecting Larry Shaw to do the tattoo. I think if you get there when they open (11am I believe) then you should be fine and not have to wait.
Feel free to call them and make an appointment if you want; it can't hurt. I have heard of some people faxing/emailing design ideas to the artist beforehand so they can make sure they like the design that the artist came up with.
Gabe Massey is also my artist : ) I like him. He's super sweet!

I don't have any tattoos but I've dated guys with lots of body art. Two of them had sleeves and/or full front torso artwork. They both went to Scorpion but I don't remember the name(s) of their artist(s).

He is! He gave me a deal too for "being a bada*s" bc I came in right after I ran a marathon (yeah yeah yeah...I got a running tat. I never claimed coolness).

there is a "big gabe" at scorpion as well. gabe massey is the littler one...lol.
i laughed, because i walked in with a "dwell" magazine, and he was all "that's my favorite!". not at all burly-man-tough-tattoo persona.
i have heard great things about shaw's from people, as well as sacred heart.
If you have questions, just call. With mine, I made an appointment to go in and share the design/have him draw it (then he e-mailed me the proof). Then a few days later I went in for the actual tattoo appointment.
also, my larger one is on the inside of my ankle (mostly on the meaty part of my leg, not the bony ankle part). it hurt significantly more toward the bony areas... even when i was on the "this doesn't totally hurt like a biznatch anymore" stage of adrenaline. there are a couple of points that are almost to my shin, and those hurt lots more.
i have one on the top of my foot and that one hurt SO BADLY. it was my first, though, so i had nothing to compare it to. but yes, it pretty much felt like hot bee stings and cat claws the whole time. what was worse is that since there is so little tissue on that part of the foot, the swelling was ridiculous. yowza. never again. although i do look down at my other foot and it feels sort of naked...lol.

Jax, don't you have a beautiful blue bird on your leg?
I'm trying to remember if it is you that got a tattoo I remember seeing on here before. I think that it was you but might be wrong because you talk about loving blue so much.

i want more birds : )
