How would you deal with this?

I used to post here awhile back, then had a baby and didn't have time anymore. So, we live on post and the kids next door are out of control. The oldest is around 11 and the youngest is about 5. They are out running around the neighborhood at 11 at night. Yelling and screaming. They ride their bikes (without helmets and usually without shoes) in the middle of the road. Last week I literally saved the 7 yr. olds life when he was riding his bike in the middle of the street and a truck almost ran him over. They are always on our property. Not just in our yard but in the carport, playing with our outside toys, etc. There have been a couple times when the 5 yr old knocks on our door because her mom went to work and locked her out. I went and checked and yes, everyone was gone and the doors were locked. I fed her lunch and took her back after her mom got home. I am at a loss of what do to. Can I contact someone her on base, do you think it warrants a CPS call? Please help, I am at the end of my rope.

Re: How would you deal with this?

  • Yes, when a five year old is locked out of his home and has no supervision, you call 911.

When children are running around the neighborhood at 11pm and screaming, you call the non-emergency number for the LE Desk.

  • I would call housing and let them know what's going on.  I would also call the MPs.  There is obviously some issues going on there if I 5 yr old is left alone and locked out of the house when his mom leaves.  I would have called the MPs right then.

  • Yes I would call cps. Leaving a 5 year old locked out of the house all day with no access to food or water and no supervision is neglect. What did the mom say when you took the kid home? Where were the other kids at all day? Do you ever voice your concerns to the parents about supervision.

  • I have tried to talk to the mom several times about my concerns. When I took the little girl home all she said was "thanks, I was wondering where she was when I left this morning." I was speechless. I am going to call CPS today and explain what is going on I hope something is done. I feel horrible for those kids! Thank you.

FFS. If I didn't know where one of my pets was when I left the house, I wouldn't leave the house. But that's okay, just go on off to work even though you don't know where your 5 year old child is. Call whoever you need to for someone to shake some sense into this lady's head. When I was little our next door neighbors were exactly like yours. One of their children got hit by a car and died.

  • Check the laws in your state as well to know for sure what she can and can't do.  I just learned that in WA it's considered perfectly okay to leave your kids home alone at the age of 3.  WTF?!

But yes, it definitely can be called to CPS, the local police, and the chain of command.  Suspected child abuse is a mandatory reportable, and the command will have to take action with the complaint.

  • My goodness!  Call CPS, but also let the MPs know every time she leaves her kids.  I would even go so far at to report it to Command.  There is no sense in this mess continuing.

  • Start documenting EVERYTHING. Write down when these kids are left unsupervised, when they are out at crazy hours at night (aren't there rules on post about when you can be making noise at night?) Take pictures if they are filthy or something, or if they don't have the proper clothing on. The MPs will probably ask for any evidence you can provide, to solidify any case they build. Depending on the circumstances, just going your word against hers doesn't hold water when a parent's custody is on the line....

Also, where is the father of these children??

REALLY? wow ... that just sounds CRAZY! I can't imagine a 3yr old being able to take care of themselves unsupervised like that ..

  • You are a great neighbor! I would def. contact CPS.
  • If you're on post, it shouldn't matter what the state laws are.  There are post rules that supercede.  I've never lived on base, but I did have a friend who got reported b/c she let her child go downstairs to the playground, and the kid was under whatever the cutoff age was.  I want to say it was family advocacy she got reported to, not CPS (or whatever the mil equivalent of that is).
