I couldn't hijack the amazing food post so I'll explain here.
I'm not sure if I ever mentioned it on this board, but back in June, 3 guys on a moto tried to rob me while I was cycling home from drinks with friends at about 11 on a Monday night. They reached into my basket and grabbed my purse, I realized what was happening and grabbed it back and luckily E was with me and rammed his bicycle into the moto, knocking the guy off. They sped away and didn't get anything.
I learned from my mistakes, no longer put my purse in the basket and don't ride my bike at night anymore. Fast forward to Saturday, I was riding my bike home from a TV shoot for work at noon, down one of the busiest streets in town. Can't get much safer than that right? I was almost to the turn off for my street and a moto pulled up beside me with 2 guys - wouldn't you know the azzholes snatched my bag right off my arm and sped off.
I screamed and chased them and actually had a couple of other guys on motos ride ahead of me to try and help catch them, but to no avail. Eventually I just stopped on the side of the road and burst out crying, and a US embassy security guard patrolling the area found me. He met me at the police station after I went home to get Eli and translated for me to fill out the police report, which was worthless because A: they won't find the guys and B: the police are so corrupt they'll get more profit from the sale of my iPod/iPhone/other stuff than what they would get to give me my bag back.
I didn't lose anything irreplaceable - other than my driver's license that I loved because I got it a few days after our wedding and it was my first attempt at my new signature and I failed miserably - but the timing is awful. E and I were meant to be celebrating our anniversary that day since he left for the US first thing this morning. It kind of put a damper on it and now I don't feel so safe on my own here for 2 months.
We did salvage part of our anniversary plans though, and I will leave you all in suspense about the details until this time tomorrow.... ::evil plan laugh::
Re: Right, so my weekend.
How awful
Sorry that happened to you! I'm glad you didn't lose anything super valuable but it sucks still!
Stay safe! (And looking forward to the anniversary details!)

That's so crappy and I'm so sorry you have to go through that now. At least the end is in sight!
IIRC, didn't you have your passport on you during the attempt in June? At least that wasn't the case this time.
And now I'm looking forward to the anniversary story!
Cecilia arrived 12 October 2012
That sounds like a horrible experience. I hope nothing like that happens again. I am glad you are okay and didn't get hurt physially.
Can't wait for tomorrow afternoon.
Holy poop balls! The nerve of those guys, seriously.
Glad you're ok, but sorry that happened!
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
How scary! I'm so glad you didn't loose anything you can't replace and that you weren't hurt. Hope you can regain your confidence and feel safe again.
Can't wait to hear about your anniversary!
Yeah, I had just gone to the Lao embassy to get our visas the last time so it would have been devastating if they had actually gotten my bag... good thing I didn't have them on me this time.
My boss was robbed a few weeks ago and her passport was in her bag, now she's technically in the country illegally since her visa is gone and has to pay $5 per day for overstaying a visa until she gets a new one issued, which may take 4 months. Honestly, this place.
Now jumping domestically.
Well that was a crazy couple of years.
Grr, that makes me so angry for you.
I guess I missed the background as to why you are going to be alone in Cambodia for two months. So I am assuming Eli's time at the tribunal is done? Is he starting a new job in the states? And are you remaining in Cambodia for work?
Ugh, I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you're okay and nothing irreplaceable was lost, but it still is totally unsettling.
Yup, he finished his contract at the UN last month and has a job waiting for him in LA. It doesn't start until the end of September but it's a federal gov't job and there is a restriction that he's not allowed to have been abroad for more than 2 of the past 5 years, so because of our time in London he's really close to the limit. I'm staying here so there's no crossover where we're both unemployed and have no income but I'm starting to consider being poor and homeless just so I can go home earlier!
Now jumping domestically.
Well that was a crazy couple of years.
Gotcha! Are you guys excited about the move to LA?
