We're expecting our first LO in October. Today we received a card in the mail from DH's grandma saying that she was almost finished with our baby quilt and would send it this week. It also said that this is the 19th baby quilt she has made for a grandchild or great-grandchild. Maybe it's the hormones, but I got a little misty-eyed and the quilt isn't even here yet!
This is why I send hand-made gifts. This gift means more to me than the store-bought gifts and it's not even here yet!
Re: SCR: baby quilts
Aw. I know what you mean.
My grandmother crosstiched all the grandkids stockings. When she passed away, my mom took over. For Christmas '08, she made my DS and my partner each a stocking. I bawled on Christmas morning. DS was due in February '09. It meant so much to me that she made DS AND my partner one, since I had just come out to them that spring.
I love them. This may be lame, but I hug them each Christmas when I get them out.

I have the quilt that my grandmother made for my graduation gift hanging in my DD room just as it hung in my college dorm room. I would never think of actually using as it is just TOO special. I am planning on taking the quilt I made for DD with me with I go visit my grandmother soon. She is 90 now and not completely coherent some days but I hope to share with her that she left a legacy.
I also have afghans that my aunt knitted and doll clothes that my paternal grandmother crocheted. Amazing stuff.
Pregnancy hormones or not - it is pretty cool to have someone love you enough to make you (and especially your child) something.
I know! I sent DH a text saying something along the lines of "OMG your grandma makes quilts? and she does so for each grandkid?"
Response?
"I dunno"
FAIL.
I'm sure that once it's here and he's not answering my texts from work that he'll be a bit more excited.
Back in college before DH and I were even engaged, I started a quilt for our first-born child. It's silly. It's one of those baby quilt cross-stitch kits. I worked on it for a year and a half. The back and binding are not the prettiest (had no idea what I was doing), but I made it and dang it, G had better snuggle with it in his dorm room!
That is so sweet. Looks like she's really looking forward to her great grand child.
