Talk to me about potty training....

So last week we got out the potty "just for fun" to see what he would do. The little shiit has peed on it 5 times since Friday night. He sits down, we tell him to go potty, and he does. This may be just a fluke, but part of me is thinking that I should maybe try to really encourage it since he seems to 'get it'. But at the same time I feel like there's no possible way this child would be able to be full on potty trained this early, even though I know its possible and that many are at this age. Yesterday afternoon he busted into the bathroom and picked up the lid and gave me his "ehh ehh ehh" cause he wanted to open the top and sit down. So I took off his diaper to see what he would do and he peed!  I don't know, I just kind of feel like if he wasn't ready and wasn't understanding then it would be a battle to get him to even sit there? I'm obviously new at this, so maybe this is all very normal behavior.

At this point I kind of plan on just letting him go before bed, and maybe when he wakes up in the morning. Then seeing if daycare will put him on it once a day or something, and just see what happens. Is this all I should do at this point? Or should I encourage it more? I should probably buy a book or something. LOL!

Re: Talk to me about potty training....

  • E was about A's age when we broke out the potty.  We didn't push it at all, just let him go if/when he wanted.  We'd offer it up every night before bath.  That first week he went all the time then he stopped cold turkey.  It was new and exciting!  We still offered all the time after that but he said no 95% of the time.  He picked it up again on his own about 2 months ago.  It's still hit and miss but he's going pretty consistently.  Again, we aren't pushing it b/c he's still waking up wet from naps/overnight and wet if we're out and about.  He only initiates going potty some of the time.  That tells me he isn't ready and I'm not pushing him.

I'd just keep doing what you're doing.  Tell daycare he's been showing interest but you're not going to force it on him.  If he wants to go, he'll go.

  • We got our potty at 18 months and the first week DS went a lot as well.  I was SO surprised!  1 1/2 months later I am not pushing it, but we still make it a small part of every day.  He is actually much better at pooping in it than going potty.  We have a seat that goes on the toliet and I think even just the whole concept is good for him to understand.  He now knows how to take his pants and diaper off, flush the toliet, get his stool to wash his hands afterwards, etc.  I would say now he is probably sitting on the toliet 2 times/day and actually goes in it probably 4-6 times a week.  I am not pushing it, but just praising when he gets it right!

  • Amy&Andy, thanks for posting. Our kids are just about the same age and I have been wondering the same thing. We haven't gotten a potty chair yet, but E is regularly telling me when she's poopy, and even goes off to be alone to poop, so she seems ready.

KMS, thanks for your response too! I need to get thyself to BRU for a potty chair!

We just got the frog potty from Target....$13 I think.  Everything at BRU was crazy expensive!

I just ordered that one the other day....the one we are using is one I got at a Consignment sale...it's fine, but the lid kind of falls down on him when he's sitting on it, and it barely has any kind of splash guard, so unless we sit him on it perfectly, he sprays everywhere! I read that this frog one was the best for boys, so I'm excited for it to arrive! :)

I think I'll just go with the flow for a while, at least until I can get him to poop on there, and then maybe I'll really work at it, but for now I guess it can just be a fun little activity to pass the time! LOL! :)
