Re: Dave says sell the car...

  • Yes Good luck getting debt free! We became debt free about 2 years ago following Dave's baby steps and haven't looked back!
  • Thanks! The only debt we had when we started the class was my car, I was so upside down (I'm way embarrased about it). We started last year in Nov and we have worked our butts off to get it paid down, we were going to keep it but now that H is in China for a year doesn't really make sense to keep trying to pay it off now that I am able to sell it (right side up again) and drive his truck. It was really lucky for me that even though my parents weren't good with money they somehow taught me to be, the car was just a mistake/slip-up (life lesson) I wont ever forget.
  • Most financial mistakes can be easily reversed. I am really glad you worked your butt off to get in the money on the car.  Car debt isn't that bad (IMO), especially with a low interest rate AS LONG AS you are in the money.

I don't think, though, that driving his truck is that great of an idea given gas prices right now.  Will he need a truck when he returns from China? I think you will be shocked at how expensive it is to keep the truck full of gas.

Have you considered selling both and getting a good fuel efficient car like an Elantra?

  • Well its not a big truck so it shouldnt be that bad. He will need it when he gets back but the plan is to save up money while he is gone to buy me a nice used car when he gets back. The money I will save by not having my car payment alone will more than enough cover the increase of my gas costs in addition when I go back to only one car on the insurance I will be saving even more money. Plus he isnt here so its only one persons budget for gas and I only live a mile from my main job. Thank you for the thoughts though. I appreciate someone looking out for me.

Yay!  Sounds like you all have a solid financial plan.  DH had a truck - he drove from Norman to N.OKC for work.  The gas cost was unbelievable. I hated to get rid of it because he absolutely loved it, but geez louise.  Plus, he didn't keep it clean which p!ssed me off. But that's another story.

There is a bank by my house in Norman - the parking lot becomes a used car dealership on Saturdays and Sundays - if you are finding you aren't having a ton of luck on CL, you should considering placing your car there. I have sold three cars there in the past year and they have all sold in a day.  Well, the truck took three days but still - fast turnaround.

    Good Luck!

  • Thanks I will keep that in mind. I can just rotate between CL, the lot at Tinker, and down there... if I have that much trouble selling. Kepping my fingers crossed that it goes pretty fast. I'm the nerd so I'm always looking at our financial plan and adjusting it, to save more money of course.

I have heard the lot at Tinker is a good place to sell too.

But I hear you - we are in the process of completing a large reno of our house - all we have left is the kitchen.  When discussing our reno plan, I realized pretty quickly I could get my "dream" kitchen and rather quickly if I got rid of my BMW.  I sold it a week later.  I used the proceeds to buy myself a Wolf dual fuel range and the amount we used to pay on the car each month is going into savings to add to our savings for the labor for the remodel. DH promised to buy me another nice car a year after the kitchen is finished but I LOVE seeing that extra amount going into our savings account each month. I have to have a good goal, though, or I am useless at saving.

I totally understand, we did the same thing and I won't ever do it again. I cannot BELIEVE we thought it was ok to spend what we did on that car. We sold it to get out of debt too, it represented most of our debt.
