Anybody interested?

DH and I did the Jacksonville Race for the Cure last year, and have been trying to get more involved ever since. I did a fundraiser back in June, and plan on doing another for the month of October.

I was wondering if anybody wanted to start a Jacksonville Nesties team? I think it would be cool to be the Pink Pirates, and dress up for the race. Anybody interested in joining? I'll be registering for the race soon, so if even one other person wants to join, I'll set it up. It's $30 per person (same as an individual), and family members, coworkers, or anybody else is welcome!

ETA: The race itself is on 10/22 at the Jax fairgrounds. It is a 5k race for those who want to run, but there are plenty of people who just walk. I wanted to run it this year, but likely won't because of knee issues.

Re: Anybody interested?

  • Since the baby's due in October, I'll have to pass on this one. Sounds fun though!

  • Do you have more info? When is it? How far is it? Do people actually run it or is this moreso a walking event?

Sorry, forgot to add that info. Edited the op to include it.

  • Is it this one? http://www.komennorthflorida.org/site/TR/Race/General?fr_id=1080&pg=entry

$30 is over my price for a 5k (especially considering I'm doing the Pumpkin Run the next weekend). Sorry!

  • I'm out of town that week.

  • I've done this one every  year in one way or another. I work in breast cancer research, so my work has a big team. I might see you down there!

Anyone interested in running it, as to CD's question -- it is the worst race in the history of life in terms of people walking. Yes, worse than the Gate. It's a charity race, and lots of ppl new to racing come out. I think this is AWESOME, but first place never does the best job of telling folks to let runners go up front and walkers hang back.  That said, it's a fast/mostly flat course if you make sure to position yourself further toward the front than you might in a normal race.

The Gate makes me stabby. WALKERS IN THE BACK! (I have no problem with walkers, but don't start in the middle of the pack if you're going to WALK the whole race.)

  • It annoys me at the gate because first place actually DOES tell people and put up pace estimation signs etc.. they're less dilligent with race for the cure, because, well, it's a race for the CURE, not the national 15k championships. But there will be strollers, people in jeans, etc., and LOTS of them. As long as you know to expect it, it's a fun race.

  • I will say that is the one thing that made it a bit crazy last year. Not only do walkers start ALL over the place, but they also have a tendency to spread out, so you can't even run around them. There's also one spot where literally only two people can run side by side, so that gets old.

Overall, though, we still participate because of the cause. And I've already put a bug in a few ears about making announcements and printing stuff in the registration packet about walkers and where they start. We'll see.

My only other gripe: the running chips. I thought they started the moment you cross the start line? Maybe I'm wrong, but that would seem most accurate to me. Apparently theirs all started at the same time. So even though it took me 3 minutes to get started, my printed running time was exactly the time on the clock when I finished.

They don't list a clock time AND a chip time? That's lame. No

No, so I kinda wondered why they paid for chips if not.

Apparently they changed that for this year.

  • they've never done it that way before. It's always been when you cross the start line. That's the point of having a chip.

I guess they might be trying to make it more obviously a charity race so that runners get the idea that this isn't meant to be a competition. But I don't get why you'd go halfway -- if you aren't going to time the chip from when the participant crosses the start line, then just don't have them.

  • oooh i just reread what you wrote, cake. That was an error. They had serious problems all over the place. I think I was listed as being 7 years old, too. It has worked correctly other years.
