ideas to turn wedding dress into cocktail dress - PIP

Hi ladies,

I'm looking for ideas to turn my wedding dress in some kind of cocktail dress so I can reuse it instead of letting it collecting dust in the closet.

It's a sweetheart neckline, laced bodice trumpet style wedding dress:wedding gown

Re: ideas to turn wedding dress into cocktail dress - PIP

  • If you took it above the knee, and then died it, I think that would look great.  Maybe go black or navy.  Also, maybe take the scraps from the bottom and make a wrap out of it to go with it.

A good seamstress would be able to do this.  I'm not gutsy enough to try something like this with my own wedding dress and mines not nearly as detailed as yours (which is beautiful btw), but if you plan to good luck!!

  • Thank you, Bigwuhead. I like the idea of using the bottom to make a wrap.
Right now my ideas are cutting it to knee length, take off the ribbon, dye it to different color. I'm so tempted to do a burgundy/red dress

Do you ( or anybody) has experience with dyeing lace?

  • Meant DYED, not died.  Whoops!

Ooh, a nice burgundy would probably look so amazing.  I've never dyed lace.  I did do a crenolin (sp) for a friends wedding for her, which I followed basically these directions:

Crinolin is much easier to dye than an entire dress. It is usually nylon, which takes dye more easily than almost any other fiber, in my experience.

What is the wedding dress made out of?   Different fibers need different dyes and techniques, and take the dye differently, so there could be variation in the color.

The dress is made of Duchess silk and the lace is French alencon

  • The dress should dye very easily, and acid dyes for silk come in gorgeous colors.

The lace should dye too, but needs a different process.

  • I'd probably see how much it would cost to get it professionally dyed.  personally I'd be more upset if I tried to dye it and it turned out horrible than if it was hanging in the back of my closet lonely

  • If you take it to the knee, your're going to want to carefully cut around the floral patterns on the lace at the hem and stitch it onto the bottom of your new hem.

That lace edging is much too pretty to lose. Also, if you didn't want strapless, you could also use the excess lace to make sleeves, straps or some kind of lace back/shoulder cover.

Thank you. The lace is on top of the body and I'm not crafty enough to take the whole lace off, so I'll have to resort to dyeing all at the same time and wish for the best

I'm afraid of this too. But I don't want to pay for professional dye either. That's why it's still hanging

I like the lace edging and the lace is stitched on top, so it's easy to take off the lace at the old hem and put it on top of the new hem. But I'm afraid it'd be too much lace. I don't mind the whole dress is laced, but with this lace hem, there's only a small part between the bodice and the hem is not laced.
