Really peeved (sorry, vent) PIP

Devyn goes to a gymnastics daycamp. I really like that place and so does he.. and it is very affordable too.

However, today I am super peeved at them. Devyn hurt his toe in the bathroom door somehow. When I picked him up he had bandages wrapped around it and they said it was bleeding but it didn't sound horrible. So I left the bandage on until after his shower to protect the toe and then took it off after his shower to take a look.

Holy frikkin hell. His toenail (big toe) is completely split in half. Under the toenail, right on the tip of his toe is a deep cut.

The incident happened before noon and when he slightly touched the cut after his shower it immediately started bleeding again. That shows me that it's deep and must have bled like crazy when it happened.

Why the f*** did nobody call me??? I could have taken him to see a doc today. Now I have to wait until tomorrow and hope it wont get infected.

I am really upset that I was no informed of this incident, considering how bad it is!

Sorry, the pic is super small, you can't really see anything. I will have to upload it from my phone to the PC

  • Poor Devyn! I would call the place and complain about them not calling you. Obviously someone messed up! So sorry!

  • Ouch! Poor kid :( I would be super upset too. Did they say how it happened? Other than ''somehow getting slammed in a door"? I would try soaking in epsom salts. H got his barefoot slammed in a door a few years ago, and except for the cut ended up looking just like that. The epsom salts helped :)

  • Nobody knows what exactly happened. Devyn can't even explain it to me.. just somehow with the door.

They just mentioned that it bled but they did not say how bad it was.

I took him to Righttime this morning (the pediatrician didn't have any appointment available). They said that he would have gotten stitches, had they seen him within 18 hours of the incident. But it was too late now for it, they said if you do it too late it will cause an infection.

Now I just hope it heals well without the stitches or I will be even more pissed. I could have gone to the doc on time if they had called me!

  • I did this to my toe one summer when I was in elementary school.  It was w/ one of the big glass doors at the mall.  I was HYSTERICAL, it hurt so bad, I basically sobbed the whole car ride home.  It was a door that swung both ways and my mom pulled the door TOWARDS us on the way out and the edge of the door caught my toe nail and ripped it up,- I wince typing this.

I didn't get stitches (and my dad is a doctor) and it healed fine.  What was left of the broken nail eventually fell off and a new nail grew in and it is/was fine.

I hope Devyn feels better, and I feel bad for you as I know how hard it must be to have to keep him still!

  • are these adults that are supervising the kids at the camp?  I would talk to them about what the protocol is for notifiying parents or at least telling you about it.  We get a written incident report for anything beyond a normal for Ella and we get a call for anything hitting her face/head.

  • Yeah, they are adults. I did go there today and asked them nicely to please call the parents if anything like that happens again or whenever they are in doubt.

And the stitches wouldn't have been for the nail itself. Underneath the nail he had a deep cut that was still bleeding 7 hours after it happened. Only that I didn't know that until after I took the bandage off. They made it sound like it was just a scrape that bled.

I am shocked at how tough he is. This has to hurt. It hurts me just looking at it. He is funny, he will cry so easily when his feelings get hurt but physical pain he takes like the bravest adult.

  • That's awful.  They should have called you immediately.  Something like that can cause a major infection, especially on a foot that is in a shoe all day.  I'm sorry:-(
