Does anyone have experience working as a travel agent?

I have some questions and would love to know more about it.

  • Isn't the travel agency industry dying?  Why work in a declining industry?

In that case, why get a job at all?  Thousands of companies are closing positions, laying off workers, firing employees.  Jobs are scarce.

I've been unemployed for over a year after applying to tons of jobs.  A nearby travel agency (which conducts services online not just for the local area, by the way) is currently hiring.  I think I'll take my chances.

  • I work in the IT department of a travel agency that specializes in Corporate Travel (although we do have a leisure department that specializes in high level travel). This industry is not dying. Corporations these days are in need of a travel agency that has the ability to assist them in making intelligent travel decisions and not allow their travelers 'free reign' when booking business related travel. We have many clients that left us to save money only to come back once they realize that while they are saving money on transaction fees, they are losing money through loss of productivity (employees spending time researching and booking travel) and on lack of control over spend.

In addition, while I would suggest anyone asking me personally about flight options to anywhere domestically to check out one of the many online booking websites, if they were saving up for their dream vacation, why on earth would they leave that to themselves to book? It's wise to use a professional when you are thinking of spending thousands of dollars on a vacation.

That said, OP, I really can't help you as I do work in IT but I did want to support you in your choice to work at a travel agency.  The one I work at has been in business for 100 years (this year is our anniversary) and we show no signs of going anywhere. I have been here 13 years come December and have had the opportunity to travel on many great discounted trips due to my job and have had the opportunity to work in a fluctuating yet exciting industry. Good Luck!
