Belly Bands

I think they are called BellyBands....from Target?  Well, my dad just had his kidney transplant this weekend and I was thinking that it is similar to a c-section. Did any of you use the belly band post c-section?  When did you start wearing it, did it just help with overall support?  How does the sizing run?

I am thinking of picking one up tomorrow morning and seeing what the surgeon thinks of it.  I know he is going to be irritated by his underwear/shorts line.  I was hoping this would help and also help with general support when coughing/sneezing.

TIA!

Re: Belly Bands

  • You can do this or the hospital should have abdominal binders which are "kinda" the same thing. They are used alot post surgery for support. I have alot of my patients use them post abdominal surgery. I'm not sure what bellabands look like (Yet, soon enough I'm sure) but the abd binder is a long piece of stretchy material and it has a velcro opening so it doesnt have to brought up or down the body to put into place.

On a side note, congrats to your father on his transplant!!

  • I had a c-section but didn't really wear mine afterwards just before when I needed to keep my pants up when I was first pregnant. One the main reasons I didnt' wear mine is because the bottom came just about across my incision and then would just roll up which was annoying and just put more pressure on the area. I just wore granny panties after surgery as they came high and didn't hit my incision, for your dad you may even consider getting him some underwear that is a size bigger or even boxers, also comfy workout shorts (maybe the nylon ones as they have a soft waist band) I lived in pj pants and sweats for at least the first 3 months.

Congrats to your dad. Hopefully his recovery is speedy.

  • I also never wore my band after pregnancy for the same reasons mentioned.

I had a belly binder put on me in the hospital after my c-section and that thing was a lifesaver. If I didn't have that there would have been no way I could have gotten off the couch at home. I am taking it with me to the hospital this time even though I plan to have a vaginal delivery.

Congrats to your dad, hope his recovery goes smoothly!

  • Thank you everyone!  I will ask about the binder here at the hospital.  I do agree that it will probably be better to have something wrapped vs. stepping into it.  I forgot about rolling too.

His surgery went well and so far so good with the new kidney function.  Keeping our prayers and fingers crossed that he makes it through the next year without any complications and then enjoys his new life feeling good!

It's been an amazing experience to go through all of this. My cousin was the donor and she is doing well too.  Just looking at all the people on this floor right now and seeing all the different types of transplants is overwhelming.  I always knew it was life changing for people, but it means so much more when you are experiencing it.

    Thanks again!
