Buying a laptop...

and I dont know where to start.  I have had all kinds of laptops and never been happy (several Dell, currently using Compaq-got a nasty virus).  Ive been to Best Buy and liked a small HP.  I would like small screen (less than 16 inch), normal size memory and processor, and light weight.  I would like the newest office as well.

Most importantly, I HATE viruses.  How can I avoid them?  I dont use  any sketchy sites.

HELP!  Sorry MAC users, I dont think I can convert.

Re: Buying a laptop...

  • I was going to say that if you want to avoid viruses, you should get a Mac....look at Lenovo. They're nice machines.
  • I own a Lenovo, and it's been my favorite (I've owned three Apple laptops, a Dell , and a Sony). Their "ideapad" brand is well built but not as ugly and businessy as the thinkpads. It is also pretty well priced. Mine has run well and I even dropped it while I was carrying it in my arms in the snow on concrete back in February and it's still going strong.

The new Dell inspiron  laptops are also pretty nice - about three of the designers I graduated with owned them and loved them.

That's a link to the newer versions of the computer I currently own. They come in a variety of sizes.  I got a customized skin from schtickers.com to cover up the boring cover as well - half the price as Dell's coloring so I can't really suggest getting a computer for color since you can put your favorite image on it at about 25 dollars for a nice, protective sticker.

    Hope that helps some.

I totally thought this, too.  Then I tried a Mac and I will NEVER own another PC.  Do you have an Apple store near you where you can at least go and play around with one?  That's what eventually converted me. :-)

  • Really consider switching to Mac. What's holding you back? I thought it would be hard to switch, since I grew up PC. But, it wasn't bad. Once you go Mac, you never go back.

So true!! I converted a couple years ago and I will never go back.

  • Avoiding viruses has practically nothing to do with the brand of computer (ETA I'm taking about PC based brands, that is), it has to do with the virus/spyware/malware protection you use, your maintenance of the computer, and your knowledge of how to avoid viruses. Most viruses now come from sites using phishing techniques to clone websites you won't suspect to steal your password.

That said, I'm brand loyal to Toshiba and have had two great laptops from them with zero problems.

  • I have had laptops from Compaq, Dell, Gateway, and Lenovo, and I prefer Lenovo hands-down.  Our Gateway is okay, but I would never buy another Dell or Compaq again based on how poor their customer service is and how short-lived they are.  Between DH and I, we've had three Lenovos and they've held up very well.  At work we have HP laptops, and while they had a ton of problems initially and their customer service has been horrendous, they've turned out to be good machines so I'd give them an average overall.

I'm not anti-Mac, in fact I would love a Macbook, but I just can't bring myself to spend that much on a laptop.  For my job a Mac would be really useful, but for the casual user I think you can get a laptop that's just as good for your needs, at a much lower price.  As someone else said, the PC brand isn't really the issue with viruses, you just need to do your research, pick a good anti-virus suite and keep it updated, and stay alert.

Ditto.  I was a dedicated PC user for years, and stated out-loud and boldly that I would never, ever, ever convert.  Then one day I got yet another virus on my HP and decided, "what the heck, let's see what the fuss is about..." and walked into an Apple store. I told the salesperson that I was a devoted PC user but that he should do his best to convince me that Mac was better and that converting would be easy.

He succeeded. I've been a Mac fan ever since.  My MacBook is nearly three years old and shows no sign of slowing down; my iMac is two years old and doing great.  I just got my H a new MacBook Pro for his birthday and he's LOVING it (he had a PC before, but also had one of the older, funky blue Macs from way back when).

Give it a try.  Trust me, you won't regret it.

  • I a comp tech, and sorry but there is no full-proof way to avoid viruses unless you avoid the internet all together. You can use anti-virus software, and be careful of what sites you visit, but chances are you will run across one at some time or another.

My recommendation is to keep your important files backed up to another device such as external hard drive or flash drive, and google how to do a full system restore on a computer in case you get one.

Most new computers have you burn your own restore discs when you buy them now instead of coming with them, and have the option built in as well.

  • Oh, and there are now viruses for Mac's OS as well, so in the near future more Mac users will be having this issue as well....
