I don't know where to start - resume writing

I feel really stupid saying this, but I don't know how to write a resume. I have a lot of responsibility at work and have been given more responsibility consistently since I've been there (5 yrs - first job out of college), but when I sit down to write it out, I feel like I've got nothing. There is my summer job from college (retail keyholder), my during-college job (student dean), and then this (insurance industry).

Selling myself is clearly not my strong point. I want to start job hunting but can't really even start until I have a resume that won't get laughed at. I guess I don't even know what kind of advice to ask for - it's that bad. Any thoughts/advice would be most welcome!!

  • I'm not very good at selling myself either, so I know how you feel!

This is a career guide that my alma mater hands out every year. http://www.tarleton.edu/careers/documents/cs_catalog.pdf

It's been extremely helpful to me! Resumes start on page 14.

  • Start with a basic template from MS Word. Then google sample resumes for your field and see what sorts of things go in there.

If you have any sort of job description through your company, use it as a way to provide some bullet points as to what you do

But you also want to show accomplishments and data. If you've increased sales, cut costs, improved efficiency, etc., these are all good things to include.

You don't necessarily need to include the college jobs if they're not relevant. But if those jobs gave you skills/experience you use regularly, list those jobs and highlight said skills/experience.

  • I had mine professionally re-written and it got me the job I have now (after almost a year of job hunting, I finally got my r?sum? done and a month later got this job).  I'd be happy to e-mail it to you if you want to PM me your address.

The coach's best advice for me was to use real numbers (i.e. don't say, "represented accounts," but say, "represented 40 accounts in 44 territories with revenue of over $48M annually).  In addition, phrase things like, "I did _____ by _____."  My r?sum?, for example, says, "Contributed to growing international business 20% year-over-year by demonstrating multicultural sensitivity and communicating extensively in Spanish with representatives from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa."

  • Thank you all for the suggestions! I am going to get started tonight. :)

I was thinking of getting a professional do my resume as well.  Who did you use? and about how much did it cost?
