Dealing with difficult neighbor (selling)...long

Got a call from our realtor last night (that I was convinced was an offer based on the late time of her call...damn)  that she had feedback from a Saturday showing.

The realtor saved our house for last for her clients to see that day and was excited about showing it to them. They were inside and loved the house. Until a "red faced, irate man showed up at the back door."

Wtf? Apparently it was our next door neighbor complaining that the agent's car was blocking him in (our driveways merge at the bottom near the street). Needless to say the buyers were turned off immediately because of the way he approached them.

He has been nothing but kind to us in the past, although we definitely see his tendency toward anger/unreasonableness. Luckily it had never been directed at us before.

Whether he was "blocked in" or not (we're convinced he wasn't), there was a way to approach the situation which he did horribly, costing us a possible sale. Lord knows how many other times this may have happened.

DH has to go over and speak with him tonight. I don't envy him.

This is not what we need right now. We have several more showings this week, so hopefully they can work it out. Ughh.....

Re: Dealing with difficult neighbor (selling)...long

  • I'm sorry - that's really annoying! You'd think he would prefer the house be sold than empty and be willing to wait a few minutes. Showings don't exactly take that long.

  • I would have your REA put a private note in the MLS listing to warn other agents that the driveway is shared and to be sure to allow room for the neighbor to park when showing the house.

Believe me, we have a lot of info already on the MLS listing for agents to see, and an explanation of the driveway situation. We even have a copy of the survey map, etc.   We definitely will add a note re. parking far over to the right after this last episode, but honestly I'm sick about how he reacted. We really don't need this on top of everything else that went on.

Here we thought having 20+ year residents as neighbors was a strong selling point, but that's only if they behave like mature adults!

  • That definitely sucks, however if he has otherwise been kind to you in the past, I have to wonder if he has been blocked in a lot by realtors and has been patient up til now, and this was just the final straw that sent him over the edge.

Let us know how the conversation went with him.

The conversation went ok. He was so apologetic, feels horrible, etc etc etc. DH was understanding but also made it clear to him how important it is for us to get this house sold and explained things from our perspective.

Oh well, at least with our recent price drop activity has really picked up and we've had a couple of 2nd showings this week- fingers crossed!
