Hi everyone! This is my first post to this board, I am a daily lurker though (you girls have the greatest craft ideas!). I found a halloween costume for my LO that I absolutely adore but can't bring myself to spend $54 on. So I was thinking of making it myself. I have been sewing pretty regularly for about the last 8 months but haven't dabbled in clothing at all. I've done blankets, burp clothes, changing pads, boppy pillow cover, clutch purses. So to get to the point of my post here is the costume that I would like to attempt to make:

I think it should be pretty easy, it looks like its basically a cape and a puffy bodysuit. But, I've never made anything without a template or tutorial. Does anyone have and suggestions for a template or tutorial I could follow then tweak for the owl details? TIA ladies!! And I just want to say you all do beautiful work and thanks so much for all the inspiration over the past few months!!
Re: Homemade Halloween Costume Help!
I actually copied it last year- at that point, I'd only been sewing for 8 months or so. I used fleece. I made an inner hood to fit her head, and enlarged it, particularly up top, made the face from felt and fleece, and used stuffing in between the layers. I did the wings like a cape, attaching them to the hood, with a tie in front. I made the body like a poofy pillowcase dress, with elastic at the bottom to gather it in and made it round.
ETA: Okay, quick pic of the top half. I have no idea where the bottom is- but, it's pretty boring. I think I added a tail- but, it's pretty much just a puffy pillowcase dress with elastic at the bottom, like I said above. Ignore the smudge on the wing- toddler costumes have a rough life.
You can kind of see how I overlapped the wings a bit- they stayed in place on her shoulders really well (for the minute she actually wore it).
