WWYD work related

Hi ladies,

so I'm starting at a new school this year, and I just got an email saying that there is a conference August 24th and 25th  that is recommended but not required. Now normally I'd be like cool I'm there, but I have a vacation planned August 19-26th 3 hours away. Should I suck it up and come back early? ( Ok I know this is what I should do, but really I just need someone who's not my husband to tell me that)

Re: WWYD work related

  • Could you just go the 25th?  I think this is what I would probably do--it shows that you are eager and enthusiastic, but also takes into consideration that they didn't send these dates until now (which, btw, would annoy the crap out of me...).

  • I think I might just suck it up, I mean we still have 5 days up north, plus that saves us money on dog boarding. I also suggested that I leave early and Sean and Myles can stay without me if they want.

  • I'd try to go for 1 day, only because it's a new position for you.  It does totally suck that you weren't informed until now, but if it doesn't bother you too much to cut your trip a day or 2 short it may be worth it.  Bummer dude.

    Now jumping domestically.

Well that was a crazy couple of years.

  • Maybe I'm a slacker but I probably wouldn't go unless I really wanted to.  Lots of people have end-of-the-summer plans.  If they needed you to be at a conference during that time, they should have given you more advance notice.

  • I would normally say to skip it except for the fact that it's a new position. Because of that I would try to make it for at least a day. Sorry. How crappy of them to give such last minute notice.

    All of this.

I second this. My vacations are a big deal for me and it takes a lot of convincing to get me to change/cancel my plans once I've made them. I'm just stubborn that way. If it's not required I wouldn't go. If it was important they would have made it mandatory attendence.

  • I third this. They should have given you more notice. Don't think of it as being a slacker - you're choosing to put your family time first. Most teachers (heck, people) I know do the exact same thing.
  • The reason it's not mandatory is because contractually they cannot make it that way, our year doesn't begin until the 30th.

Also there was no way I would have known about this conference had I not been friends with people who already work at this school.

The only reason I want to go is to make a good impression on the new principal of the school.

I'll make it a game time decision.
