Just venting and whining...no follow up after interview

And I also feel humiliated.  I interviewed 5 weeks ago for a clinical educator position that would cover my current unit I work and two additional units.  My boss was supportive and encouraged me to apply and I am qualified in credentials, but I do lack one certification (that I am signed up to take) and am not extremely proficient in some of the nursing skills (such as ventilators) but they assured me those would not be issues during the interview.  As soon as I called her and submitted my application, I had an interview in less than a week.

I have not heard one word.  In the interview she said it would be the next week, or the week after.  I called at the 2 week mark after the interview and left a message with the secretary.  I emailed a week later, while on vacation, where she could reach me.  I emailed at the 4 week mark and got an out of office reply (until today).  Today, I called while at work and she answered and simply asked for my extension and she'd call me back....surprise surprise, she did not.

Two weeks ago, I was over the position and even realized that this may not be the job for me.  Now, I'm simply pursuing this or following up because I am humiliated.  I have never interviewed for a job and not heard back in some fashion - especially after I felt like it was one of the best interviews I've ever had...

Re: Just venting and whining...no follow up after interview

  • hugs! i hope you hear back real soon. the person could have apologized or something for the delay.....its frustrating when I recruit that no matter how quick I am it seems like the number of people that need to review/approve mgt level positions...extends the process...

on the flip side my pet peeve is the "black hole" so i always follow up regardless if its 20 apps or 200 by mail--never mind my co has a 24 -48 hour policy to respond to every. single. application. so one day I decided to call and inform candidates about another location that had an opening because ours was close to being filled...well they were sooo incredibly rude..

i'm back to sending the auto email...

  • I hear you... Job hunting is frustrating.  I'm looking for a new job (though I am grateful that I have one now) and have applied to over ten positions that I feel like I'm really qualified for and have heard nothing.  From anyone!  I don't understand.  I even made a really cool online resume that i think shows my creativity and I still can't get an interview.  What gives?
  • I had several interviews this summer where I had no contact afterwards not even an email to say sorry? and the job was simply filled.  I feel like they could at least call and leave a message instead of just taking the job off their website.  It's so rude!  I'm sorry you were left waiting
  • i'm really sorry, that sucks!

i've interviewed for countless jobs (and in some cases had what i thought was a great interview) and heard absolutely nothing back. i find it to be unprofessional and just plain rude. thanks for wasting my time and not having the courtesy to let me know you went another direction. and DC is even worse than NYC on that front. appalling really.

  • It sounds like they haven't made a decision yet.  I wouldn't keep calling.  Not hearing something back isn't reason to be humiliated.  I wouldn't get out of bed in the morning if I was humiliated by all the jobs I applied to and heard nothing back.  It's summer.  I'm guessing the hiring process is just taking longer than expected.  Good luck!
  • This really seems to be the way of the world today. I've probably had 4 or 5 intervies over the past couple of years...I think I've heard back from one.

This was my first thought - that the people doing the hiring fell behind schedule.  Who knows why, it doesn't really matter, but I'd keep your chin up - I bet they just haven't decided yet.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

This is what I think is going on as well...hiring is often put on the back burner...

  • You gave your time and effort to interview for their position, they at least owe it to you to keep you informed if they haven't responded when they said they would. Ignoring you is rude and unprofessional, like pp said. I would continue to follow up and expect an answer, even if it's "we haven't made a decision yet and expect to know in three weeks."  Some companies value persistence, too, so you can show them that you'll mean business when you come to work for them.

I, too, was once a job-hunter and was amazed at how companies think it's ok to just never let the interviewee know what happened.

  • Thanks everyone for the encouragement!

I had been chalking it up to no decision yet/fell behind, but an update with the status of things would have been nice especially since she did give me a specific time she'd notify me.

Even if they did end up offering it to me, I'm not interested now because I don't want to work for someone that has made it this challenging to stay informed.  Two ohter little tidbits of information: she failed to tell me about my own interview...I mentioned how I applied for the position to my current boss and SHE told me about my interview (because she was also interviewing me).  Awkward.  Additionally, the woman hiring was late to my interview.  By 30 minutes.  The rest of the panel started my interview without her.
