switching to formula

I decided that BF just was not for me. Emily is getting tummy aches every night, I'm feeding her almost every 2 hours except at night and I absolutely hate pumping. I had a really hard time with this mentally, but decided for my sanity that we needed to make the switch. So formula it is.

We started her on Similac last night, she slept great again last night and woke up even later this morning. The thing is I'm not sure how much to give her. Last night she had 2 2oz bottles in a row. So we though "ok, maybe she needs a 4 oz bottle." She woke up to eat around 3 and only ate 1 oz out of her 4 oz bottle. This morning she drank all 4 oz, but then spit about half of it up. So should we just stick to 2 oz then?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Here's a pic so this isn't all boring

Re: switching to formula

  • Definitely stick to 2oz.  If you are thinking she is still hungry though, wait some time and let her have a paci for a little while to let her belly settle.  Or get a big burp out.  Once she seems to be taking 2oz well all the time, I'd then bump her to 3oz.  Sometimes spit up looks like it is way more than it actually is.  I believe Similac has on their website pictures of "normal" amounts of spit up and which amounts to be alarmed at.  She probably is also just adjusting to the formal as well.

Good luck mama!  I'm so jealous of the amount of sleep you are getting:)

Thanks! It's still only like half sleep since I'm still getting used to her noises and whatnot. She's a very vocal baby! She grunts, sighs and squeaks all night long!

  • I agree. Nate took 2 oz at a time the first couple of weeks. The first few days, he was taking only 1 oz at a time. They say at 3 days old the baby's stomach is only the size of a ping pong ball; the size of a large chicken egg by 10 days old. Since a formula bottle doesn't "keep" very long after the baby has started drinking from it, we only started making 4 oz bottles when he was consistently taking 2 2-oz bottles in a row. It was a lot of trial and error, too. Actually what seemed most efficient was to mix up a larger amount, keep it in the fridge, and just pour into bottles 2 oz at a time.

  • My pediatrician says to feed on demand. If she's hungry, feed her. Is she rooting; moving her mouth around, etc? If yes, keep feeding her. When she slows down, stop. Burp her every 1.5 ounce or so. I agree w/ Rachel on trial and erro for sure and making a larger bottle and pouring it into smaller when she needs it.

That being said, the first couple of weeks home, Ava took between 1 ounce-2.5 ounces per feeding and quickly went up to 3-4 ounces. She wanted to catch up in weight I think. :o)

Yeah. Ava is a farm animal too.

We moved her into her nursery early for this reason; I was not sleeping at all.

  • I agree with everything that has been said. My pedi told us to feed on demand. We started out with 2 ounces but quickly moves to 3 and 4 ounces. It takes some trial and error, but you'll get it. Don't get frustrated. Hang in there mama!

  • I've got nothing else to add - they all gave the same advice I would've - but I just wanted to say the pic of her is adorable!

  • Piper grunts so loudly over night in her sleep that we have to put her in her crib once she falls into a deep sleep. Otherwise, neither of us sleep the entire night.

  • I have nothing really to add except that I love, love, love the pic of Emily! I also hate pumping too. Joel does fine with BF and bottle, but I just hate pumping and I am not looking forward to doing it when I go back to work next week. We may make the switch to formula.
