Will's Birth Story

Phew, two weeks later and I finally get to writing this out! So far, he has been an absolutely dream baby, and Kyle and I are totally in love, and he is being so kind as to nap for a few so that I can write this all out!

I woke up on the 23rd feeling pretty crampy and uncomfortable, but had chalked it up to the fact that my doctor had swept my membranes again on Friday morning, so I didn't think much of it. By noon or so, the cramping started to get pretty aggressive and come in waves, so I started timing them and they were still 20-25 minutes apart. Kyle came back from a run, and the cramping started getting more intense, and by 4PM I was in serious pain. After an especially violent contraction (that left me vomiting from the pain- not fun!) I had Kyle call the doctor's office, and they told us to come on in, even though they were still around 10-12 minutes apart. After a VERY long walk up to the maternity ward we were checked into the triage room around 6pm so I could get checked out. I vomited again, and they hooked up me up to a monitor. The nurse came in to check how far I was dilated, and I fully expected them to tell me I was around 4cm. The nurse got this strange look on her face and said something about not believing what she was feeling- I was 8 cm! Needless to say, the admitted me right away and walked me down to my room. It was a quiet night in L&D so there were about 6 nurses in the room when I came in, and they were all psyched. Woah.

Once they got my drip line in and got me settled, Dr. Leighton came in to check me out, and at this point I had jumped to having contractions every 2-3 minutes, and I was in a LOT of pain. After checking me, Dr. Leighton commented that I was pretty much ready to go, and she could go ahead and break my water to get the ball rolling. I had them give me a minute to process and talk to Kyle, and request an epidural, as I knew I had reached my pain threshold. The funniest part was that in the midst of my contractions, I turned into a Mid-Western housewife- I was so beyond pain that I had lost any ability to swear or scream and had resorted to "Oh my gosh!" and "Wow that hurts!". Ridiculous coming from the girl that usually has the mouth of as sailor. Smile

About 15 minutes later, the lovely anesthesiologist came in and got me set up with the epi. My god, that was a relief! Dr. Leighton came back in, broke my water and we got ready to rock. After about 30 minutes or so of pushing, William Harvey Jellison was born at 9:11pm on July 23rd! They were concerned that he might have inhaled some meconium since he had poo'd just before my water broke, but he turned out to be just fine. It was an amazing feeling when they placed him on my chest, and I was the first to see that our mystery baby was indeed a boy. Kyle ran out to the hallway to tell my parents and I heard the cheer go out.

He really is an amazing child, and I can't wait for more adventures with him!
