Dairy-free margarine?

I know several of you have had to go dairy free for your BFing infants, so thought maybe someone would be able to point me to some dairy-free margarine. I actually thought margarine was dairy-free by nature, but checked the "vegetable oil margarine" that I have in my fridge and it contains milk. I want to bake something that my dairy-allergic nephew can eat, otherwise I'd settle for what I have on hand.

Anyone know if dairy-free margarine is easy to find around here and if it's very expensive?

And just because I don't think I've used this word enough in this post... dairy. Stick out tongue

Re: Dairy-free margarine?

  • HyVee Health market carries a brand called Earth's Balance. They have one kind that is dairy and soy free and several other options as well. I have baked with it and while it isn't the same as regular butter, it is actually ok and my baked goods did NOT have a strange consistency when it used it unlike some other options. It is pretty pricy-- about $5 a tub, but Weds. the health market is 10% off, which helps a bit!
  • I woke up too early this morning so I decided to get my baking done before work. I went to HyVee and ended up finding the Earth's Balance. I passed because of the price, although I forgot about 10% off Weds, which would have helped. Since I only need it once, I decided to try Butter Flavor Crisco instead. Cupcakes are in the oven now.

  • I love Earth's Balance...buy it on Wed to save 10 percent or buy it at Trader Joe's who usually has it cheaper the Hy-Vee.

  • Thanks! I'll have to look next time I'm at TJ's. My sister is not in town very often, but next time I'll plan some baking ahead. Her poor kid gets stuck with Oreos anytime we have cake, cookies, brownies, etc. Not that Oreos are bad, but that would get old.
